Why Does Doflamingo Wear Glasses

One Piece is one of the longest running anime franchises of all time. Starting back in 1999 and currently running with over 780 episodes, the anime giant has captured fans hearts and fandom. But like many long running series, there are unresolved side stories and mysteries. One mystery that has never been touched is what the dastardly captain of Donquixote Pirates, Doflamingo, is hiding under his glasses. The character is seen with a couple different pairs of shades but never without them, and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda finally gave fans an inside look at what the pirate had underneath his glasses.

Oda tweeted a picture with a question from a fan, with a comical answer. The anonymous fan asked, “If Doflamingo Took off his glasses, how would he look like?” and the artist actually answered, with a picture!

Oda answered with a silly answer, which if you know the creator, should not be surprising. “Another glasses appear under the glasses instantly” Oda responds, with a picture of Oda whipping off his glasses to another pair magically there already. This is most likely not the answer the fan was looking for, but One Piece fans applauded and laughed, thinking the gag was hilarious. Some fans have started theorizing that there is a reason that Oda never shows the pirates eyes, like how Kakashi’s face was hidden behind a mask for such a long time. Only time will tell if there is a reason behind Doflamino’s mysterious glasses, but until then fans will have to come up with their own theories and enjoy Oda’s humor.

Eiichiro Oda began his manga career in 1992 at the age of 17, when his one-shot cowboy manga Wanted! won second place in the coveted Tezuka manga awards. Oda went on to work as an assistant to some of the biggest manga artists in the industry, including Nobuhiro Watsuki, before winning the Hop Step Award for new artists. His pirate adventure One Piece, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997, quickly became one of the most popular manga in Japan.
