Who Were The Perizzites

Joshua 3:9-10… “Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God. And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites” (KJV). In our last lesson, we heard about the Hittites who intimidate people with fear tactics. The Hittite spirit attacks when the going gets tough and your way is hard. In this lesson we want to take a look at the Perizzites.

The word “Perizzites” means “unprotected; an unwalled village.” The Perizzite spirit seeks an unguarded opening in your life or an unguarded moment, and it wants to squat there. It can do a lot of damage when we leave an opening unprotected. Ezekiel 38:10-11 says, “This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme. You [the evil army] will say, ‘I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people-all of them living without walls and without gates and bars” (NIV). Joshua was warning the Israelites that when they enter the land, they were not to let their spirits go unprotected. In other words, don’t get careless or drop your guard. The devil in Job 1:10 watched for an opening in the life of Job, but God protected Job’s person, his job, his family, his possessions, and his influences. These are the areas the Perizzite spirit looks to attack.

Proverbs 25:28 teaches, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls” (KJV). The enemy comes when you are angry, when your temper gets out of control, when you rage, when you lack faith, when you are depressed, when you criticize, when you gossip, when you lose control of your lusts, and more. What are walls? Our faith is a wall, our emotions are walls, keeping a right spirit (attitude) is a wall, and the way we think is a wall. Prayer, praise, and worship are walls. The Bible is a wall. God is our shield (wall). Proverbs 18:14 says, “A man’s courage can sustain his broken body, but when courage dies, what hope is left” (TLB). The King James says, “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear?” Our body and our life are upheld by our spirit. The Perizzite spirit wants you to let your guard down. It wants to take away your courage. Daniel was upheld by an excellent spirit (Daniel 5:12, 6:3). When Paul arrived in Rome, after a tragic sea voyage, he was asked about his frame of mind. “What do you think? How did you put your thoughts together? We want to know why you think and talk the way you do.” Paul talked to them of the kingdom of God and the power of the gospel. The kingdom was in Paul’s spirit. No Perizzite had an entrance there.

Paul wrote to Timothy and said, “The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit” (2 Timothy 4:22, KJV). He wrote to the Galatians and said, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” (Galatians 6:18). One of the meanings of the word “grace” is “operational power.” God is concerned with wrong attitudes today. There is a mentality in our society that is wrong. People, both old and young, have opened up their spirit to the Perizzite spirit. The Perizzite spirit wants to separate you and isolate you from what is right and good. The Perizzite spirit operates in lies and innuendoes. Joshua warned the Israelites to guard their spirit and make no opening for it to enter. Paul puts it this way, “Do not leave room for the Devil” (Ephesians 4:27, Weymouth). The news is full of items about people who have been hurt because they let their guard down. How about you, saints? Our enemy is the devil. Stand firm against him. He goes about looking to devour. Your life should be a praise unto God and not “meat” for the devil. Have you unconsciously made an opening? You can close it by first asking God to forgive you. Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to build walls of protection. Find a prayer partner… the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:27-28) is the best one to get.
