When Does Frieren Come Out

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was, in short, a modern anime classic. A brilliant adventure that balanced heartfelt introspection, complex characters, and stunning animation across 28 unmissable episodes.

The series was equal parts fantasy adventure and character study, with the unbeatable team at Madhouse delivering incredible visuals, whether it was quiet fields of flowers and misty glades, or shocking action sequences and huge monster battles.

However, after a meaty first season, the show has come to an end. Frieren’s first season aired its finale on March 22, leaving fans eager to discover whether the show will return for a second season.

Unfortunately, the show hasn’t been renewed yet, but here’s everything we know so far.

Frieren’s season-one finale aired on March 22 and, at the time of writing, we still haven’t had confirmation that the show will return for season two, which means we also don’t have any kind of release date.

The show has proved immensely popular both in Japan and internationally though, so we’d be surprised if it didn’t get a second shot.

If the show does come back we wouldn’t expect to see it any time soon, however, given the amount of love and attention that went into producing the show’s expansive first 28 episodes.

Frieren season two is yet to be confirmed, but if it does come back we’d expect to see many of its large ensemble cast return, including:

  • Frieren – Malorie Rodak (EN) / Astumi Tanezaki (JP)
  • Fern – Jill Harris (EN) / Kana Ichinose (JP)
  • Stark – Jordan Dash Cruz (EN) / Chiaki Kobayashi (JP)
  • Himmel – Clifford Chapin (EN) / Nobuhiko Okamoto (JP)
  • Heiter – Jason Douglas (EN) / Hiroki Tochi (JP)
  • Eisen – Christopher Guerrero (EN) / Yoji Ueda (JP)
  • Flamme – Lydia Mackay (EN) / Atsuko Tanaka (JP)

The studio making a potential second season is also unconfirmed, but we’d be very surprised if anyone other than the incredible team at Madhouse was given reins of this franchise.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season one covered the first four story arcs of the original manga, which take up roughly half of the currently available material (volumes 1-7). At the time of writing 13 volumes have been published, which means there’s plenty of story left, especially if Madhouse were to produce a slightly shorter second season.

We won’t go into too much detail about what’s contained in volume eight onwards, to avoid spoilers, but know that full plot details are just an easy Google away.

In short, anime viewers will remember that Frieren and co’s journey was delayed significantly by the events of the mage exams. It’s not too much of a leap to imagine that a second season would see them continue into the northern kingdoms now that Fern has received her First Class Mage certificate and they can (in theory) travel safely through the demon-riddled lands.

There’s currently no footage or trailers available for Frieren season two, which is unsurprising since the show hasn’t officially been renewed yet. If and when the show’s return is greenlit, we wouldn’t expect to see first-look teasers any earlier than a month or two before the release date.

We’ll be sure to update this page as soon as a trailer drops though, so be sure to check back in.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’s first season is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
