Item #SB3655 Acclaimed science fiction author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) wrote numerous books for both children and adults, and he is best known for his two series featuring the characters of Tarzan and John Carter of Mars; his work had a significant influence on the science fiction genre and even on actual space exploration of Mars. This biography by Irwin Porges is a thorough examination of Burrough’s life and work, with an introduction by science fiction and fantasy writer Ray Bradbury (1920-2012). Bradbury admired Burrough’s work and his collection of short stories “The Martian Chronicles” was strongly influenced by Burrough’s fiction about the planet Mars. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black faux leather with yellow cloth boards, facsimile of Edgar Rice Burrough’s signature in black on the front board, gilt rules and lettering on the spine, light green endpapers, double-spread title page with black-and-white photograph of Burroughs and black lettering, black-and-white photographs throughout; Baskerville type, quarto size (11.25″ by 8.75″), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xix [xx] 1-819 [820], signed by Irwin Porges in blue in, at the bottom of the front flap of the dust jacket. In a white paper dust jacket with colour illustration inside a black ruled border and brown and black lettering on the front panel, black lettering on the spine, a black-and-white photograph of Burroughs on the rear panel, a description of the book on the front flap, and author bio on the rear panel; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of $14.95 on the front flap. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners, with light soiling to the bottoms of the boards and to the text block.
