The article, titled “10 Most Dangerous Cities In Colorado 2023: Exploring the Dark Side,” was published on SouthwestJournal.com.
The Southwest Journal used to be a weekly newspaper covering southwest Minneapolis. Since the paper folded in 2020, its domain has been taken over by a company that uses artificial intelligence to create articles that mine clicks through search engine optimization, according to a February article by Twin Cities Business.
Twin Cities Business reported in February the company that owns SouthwestJournal.com is registered in Delaware and owned by someone in Serbia.

The company’s owner told Twin Cities Business he has more than 1,300 websites, and is not interested in local news.
Despite that, SouthwestJournal.com has reported what it claims are the crime rates of what it says are the 10 most dangerous Colorado cities, including Grand Junction, Aurora, La Junta, Alamosa, Pueblo, Glendale, Sheridan, Canon City, Colorado Springs and Federal Heights.
The article’s Grand Junction portion states:
“A criminal incident transpires in Grand Junction approximately every 3 hours and 13 minutes on average.
“The city bears a crime rating of D+, signifying that its crime level surpasses that of an average U.S. city, placing Grand Junction at the 29th percentile in terms of security.

“The crime frequency in Grand Junction is 49 for every 1,000 inhabitants, indicating that the city has one of the highest crime rates nationally, despite its population falling under 70,000 people.
“Based on data, there’s a 1 in 177 probability of falling prey to a violent crime and a 1 in 23 chance of encountering a property crime in Grand Junction.”
The article is an almost exact copy of a similar article that appeared on a sketchy-looking website purporting to help travelers stay safe. It’s unclear where the data from the article came from.
“I know our crime analyst attempted to find out where they got their data for that article with no luck,” Mesa County Sheriff Todd Rowell said in an email.
Rubinstein went even further, saying, “If you look at that article, it is not even consistent with its own data. In the Grand Junction section ranking us as the worst, it says ‘The city bears a crime rating of D+, signifying that its crime level surpasses that of an average U.S. city, placing Grand Junction at the 29th percentile in terms of security.’ Then in the Pueblo section it says ‘The crime rate in Pueblo is 70 per 1,000 inhabitants, making this city more dangerous than 98% of the communities within the state.’ It then ranks Pueblo fifth, to our first. They rank Glendale sixth after saying ‘Glendale is safer than 0% of U.S. cities.’ “
“This place is very safe,” Rubinstein said of the Grand Junction area.
