Sean Considine doesn’t like playing football in the heat. It drains his energy and tests his resolve more than a wide receiver at full stride.
But something was different at EverBank Field Sunday afternoon. The choking heat and humidity seemed to work in the favor of the free safety and the rest of his Jaguars teammates in a 24-17 win over the Denver Broncos.

The sunburn on his neck and arms were the only evidence of the hottest game in Jaguars history. For the first time in his career, the heat was an ally.
“I usually struggle in the heat, but even in these conditions I didn’t have any problems,” Considine said. “We know how to prepare for the heat. We practice in it every day. We’re used to it.”
Jaguars players were given a list of things to do early in the week to prepare for the heat. They were told to drink a lot of water and Gatorade, and to make sure they used plenty of salt in their diets to prevent cramping.

It was 90 degrees with a heat index of 98 degrees at kickoff; the heat rose to 93 degrees with a heat index of 105 during the second half.
“You can’t show up to the stadium on Sunday and drink enough water to be prepared for something like that,” Considine said. “You [had] to start drinking a lot of water three or four days ago.”
Then came a thunderstorm that sent the teams to the locker room for a 33-minute delay early in the fourth quarter.
“That’s what you call a ‘Welcome to Florida’ kind of weather day,” said cornerback Rashean Mathis. “We had heat and humidity, thunder and lightning and clear skies – everything Florida is known for. But we’re used to it, so I’m sure it worked in our favor.”
A thunderstorm created the first regular-season postponement in team history. Oddly enough, there were two weather-related delays during the preseason, so the Jaguars easily got back into their routine.

“We’ve done it several times during the preseason,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. “We wanted to go back out and play, but [Denver] wanted the 10-minute warm-up. I don’t think it bothered us at all. If it stayed hot, I think that would have worked in our favor a little more.
“But I thought it was a nice afternoon for football.”
Defensive end Aaron Kampman said Sunday’s weather was more threatening than anything he’s ever seen before.
“It was hot, and I’ve never been through a storm like that before,” he said. “Then it really cooled off. The ebb and flow of that game was really weird. The thing is, that’s what we’re used to.
“Hot is hot, just like cold is cold in Green Bay.”
