Anonymous asked: How exactly did Peeta get better/recover from his hijacking?
I think it was quite a long process, even though it doesn’t seem so in the book. In MJ between Snow’s execution and when Peeta comes back it is just a few pages. But timeline-wise, it’s been months in between. Also, we shouldn’t forget that he already got some treatment (faulty, but still treatment) when he was rescued.

By my estimates, Peeta was rescued at the end of August. After that they gave him morphling, he got visits from Delly who kept talking to him what was real and what wasn’t, they played tapes for him so he would see the real events. He goes into the Capitol at the beginning of November. So it seems like Peeta got relatively better soon when you read the book because everything moves so fast. But in fact it was 2 months of D13 filling him with what is real and what isn’t on a daily basis. Which is intense treatment considering the frequency.
Then what pushes him some more to differentiating what’s real and what isn’t, is the talks with Katniss in the Capitol. I think that everyone else was telling him what is real and what wasn’t, but majority of his doubts revolved around her, since the hijacking was targeting her image in his head. So he needed her feedback the most. When he gets it, it helps him a lot I think. He could’ve completely lost touch with reality in the Capitol with the mutts and the traps, yet he didn’t and I think talking with Katniss contributed to that.
Then the City Circle bombing happens. He is in the hospital for a long time, so during that time they can’t treat him for his hijacking. But they could’ve treated him for hijacking between Snow’s execution and when he came back to D12. And that’s between roughly Christmas time and end of March or beginning of April. So he gets 3 full months of Capitol’s treatment. I’m emphasizing Capitol’s because I think they had better trained doctors and they had access to better meds for sure.

I even have this headcanon that they had some kind of meds that would speed up recovery from hijacking. Snow was smart. And if he was developing hijacking, he probably would’ve wanted to make sure it can’t be used against him or against Capitol’s soldiers in case of rebellion. I mean, Snow had anti-venom for all the venom he was feeding his opponents. It’s only logical that he’d want anti-venom for tracker jacker venom. So my headcanon is that parallel to hijacking process being developed, they were also developing anti-venom and meds to treat hijacking if it’s too late for anti-venom. My headcanon is also that Coin knew of anti-venom and the meds through her spies and most likely Plutarch as well, but that Peeta was more useful to her unhinged, so the doctors weren’t allowed to use it in D13 (or were never informed of it)
But I think the message SC wanted to make with Peeta coming back relatively fine to D12 (I say relatively fine because I think he still had things to sort out and consequences of hijacking that followed him his whole life) is that veterans that get treatment recover much faster than the ones that don’t get treatment. Like Katniss. Katniss was just sent to D12, a place which can only trigger her PTSD and left to her own devices and she didn’t get better at all. It’s a miracle really that she didn’t kill herself because that’s what a lot of veterans do when left without any help. And Peeta got help and he was better. So I think the point that SC was trying to make with that is that help is really important in recovery of PTSD sufferers.
I wrote about that in a more lengthy manner here if you’re interested.
