Why Are There Two Monday Night Football Games

The 2023-24 NFL season has moved in a blur with Week 14 already rapidly approaching with only five weeks remaining.

For the upcoming slate of games, there will be two simultaneous matchups on Monday night, Dec. 11 at 8:15 p.m. with the New York Giants hosting the Green Bay Packers on ABC (and streaming on the ESPN+ app) and the Miami Dolphins taking on the Tennessee Titans on ESPN.

The traditional “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth of Joe Buck (play-by-play), Troy Aikman (analyst) and Lisa Salters (sideline reporter) will be in the Meadowlands. The other crew will feature Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Louis Riddick (analyst), Dan Orlovsky (analyst) and Laura Rutledge (sideline reporter) in South Beach.

Here’s what you need to know for these AFC & NFC matchups to close out Week 14.

Why are there two Monday Night Football games in Week 14?

The Giants-Packers and Dolphins-Titans will appear in the first ever edition of “Monday Night Football” airing two games with a coinciding start time. The NFL did this as it’s trying to “transform a Sunday afternoon environment into a primetime window,” per ESPN’s press room.

What’s going to make these broadcasts even more special is what the alternative option of “Monday Night Football with Peyton & Eli” is bringing to the table.

While the two former QBs usually have their single game to analyze, ESPN is also “Adding to the first-ever side-by-side Monday Night Football event, Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli (ESPN2 and ESPN+) will offer fans the ability to watch both games simultaneously, with the Manning brothers commentating on the important MNF matchups concurrently, delivering fans the most exciting action from each game in real-time.”

This could be a big boost to bump the “Manningcast” ratings as viewership has fallen off with fans seemingly agitated that the show continues to bring on different celebrity guests each week to be interviewed by the two former QBs rather than them just breaking the game down play-by-play.

As I mentioned back about the staggered start times in Weeks 2 & 3 of the regular season in late September, this is positive news for those of us in the area and across the eastern time zone. Both these games will likely conclude around 11:30 p.m. so there’s no need to worry of a typical second game that’s usually on the West coast and begins at 10 p.m. with a usual end time anywhere after 1 a.m.

The NFL has had record-breaking viewership numbers this year. Week 13’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the Chiefs and Packers was NBC & Peacock’s most-watched NBC SNF game ever – averaging nearly 26 million viewers – according to an NBC press release.

Furthermore, it was the fifth game on NBC Sports alone to reach at least 25 million viewers, the most amount of games to hit that number by Week 13 of any season since 2015.
