I’ll never forget the first time I saw the water in the Bahamas. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The water was so blue and so clear. I felt like I could see everything under the water. It was amazing!
You are viewing: Why Is The Water So Blue In The Bahamas
Since then, I’ve been curious about why the water in the Bahamas is so blue. I did some research and found out that there are a few reasons why.
The Water Around the Bahamas is Shallow
The word “Bahamas” comes from the Spanish phrase “Baja Mar,” which means shallow ocean.
One reason the water in the Bahamas is so blue is due to the shallow waters surrounding the islands.
How Deep Is The Water Around The Bahamas
The water surrounding the Bahamas is usually no more than 33 feet deep, but if you venture into the ocean basin, depths as low as 13 100 feet are not uncommon.
This makes for some stunningly clear blue waters, especially when contrasted against the white sands of the beaches.
Why is water a different color around the Bahamas?
When you see an aerial view of the Bahamian Islands, you will notice many shades of blue. Why is the water different?
This can be for two main reasons:
The first reason is the depth of the water. You can sometimes gauge the depth of the water by the lightness or darkness of the blue waters.
The deeper the water, the darker blue you will see, whereas the shallow waters will reflect the white sand and appear lighter.
The ocean looks blue because of the way water absorbs different wavelengths of light. The blue coloring that you see is a response to sunlight reflecting off the powdery white sands and corals on the ocean floor.
The second reason that some water can look “darker” is if there is a coral reef, rock formations, or thick sea grass. These artifacts will be darker in color, and change the way the light reflects, causing a darker color.
Upwelling
Upwelling is a phenomenon that occurs when the colder and deeper water replaces the warmer water of the ocean. The colder water has more sediments in it and this movement creates murkiness.

The presence of a coral reef, rock formations, or thick sea grass will block the deeper water from moving into the ocean, which prevents upwelling from happening.
The water around the Bahamas doesn’t experience upwelling due to the reefs that surround the islands.
Since the water doesn’t undergo upwelling, there is no sedimentation reaching the coast. Thus, the water stays crystal clear.
Algae and Nutrients
Another reason the water around the Bahamas is so blue has to do with the amount of “stuff” that lives in the waters around the Bahamas.
Phytoplankton is a microscopic organism that can be found at the bottom of the ocean. It is often called algae, and it has high levels of chlorophyll.
This chlorophyll is responsible for giving the water a green color, and because the Bahamas doesn’t have a high concentration of plankton, the water around the islands appears to be blue.
Silt and sediment levels play a role in the clarity of ocean water. Ocean water can be murky due to the high levels of sediment in the water.
The higher the levels of silt and sediment, the murkier the water will be.
The water in the Bahamas has larger sediment particles than other locations, so the particles quickly settle to the bottom rather than floating on the surface..
This is why the water in the Bahamas is much clearer than in areas with high levels of silt and sediment.
