WARSAW, Ind. (WSBT 22) — A long-time local favorite is closing its doors after 73 years in business.

Penguin Point officials say the remaining 6 locations and a Happy Burger will close for good on Sunday.

This comes after several locations closed across Michiana in November of last year.

The Warsaw community was in shock today as it was announced that the staple restaurant chain was closing.

Many customers lamented the fact that this would likely be their last meal as the store was already running out of supplies to make food.

“I was really sad. Very sad. I felt sad for the employees and for the community. As you can tell, it’s very packed here trying to get our last meal before they close. And I don’t even think I’m going to be able to do that. We’re running out of food,” said Karen Swihart.

One customer says she’s always returned to Penguin Point after working there for her first job.

Her husband, Carroll Blair, has been going to Penguin point since the 1970’s and created many memories for him and his wife.

“I’d come here with my wife, and we would eat. Sometimes we get a box, you take it across the street American parking at the table is good memories, good memories of all the staff the different items they have, and it was a great time,” said Blair.

The announcement came as a complete surprise for many – including the staff who found out this morning that they would be out of a job.

With a packed drive-through and huge lines inside, it seems just about everyone wanted to get one final meal from the restaurant.

David Cappes said he can’t believe all the remaining stores are shutting down.

“I had never had any idea that the whole chain in the whole state of Indiana were closed down. And I have sons that live out of state and that’s going to be sad for them,” said Cappes.

Penguin Point’s official announcement said they would be closing Sunday, but with the store already out of many supplies, it may close ahead of the expected date.
