The arrival of cooler weather means deer mating season is here, and according to AAA, the most deer-involved car collisions are from October to December.

So, here’s what to be aware of in order to keep yourself safe.
THE FACTS
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the Triad is quite acquainted with animal-related crashes. In 2022, Alamance County ranked at No. 30 in this category, Rockingham County came in at No. 18, Davidson County was ranked at No. 16, Forsyth County came in at No. 14, and both Guilford and Randolph Counties were top five in animal-related crashes, at No. 4 and No. 2 respectively.

From 2020 to 2022, total damages related to animal-related crashes cost just over $20 million. This is across five Triad counties (Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Davidson, and Alamance). So, not only is it unsafe for you, but it’s definitely unsafe for your wallet.

Also, from 2020 to 2022, the percentage of crashes that were animal-related in October was 14.1%. For November, it ballooned even further to 22.6%, and December was 13.1%. To put things into perspective, no other months even touched 10%.

TIPS FOR AVOIDING DEER COLLISIONS

There are several things to keep in mind while driving during deer-mating season. AAA advises you to do the following:
-Use high beams at night when there’s no oncoming traffic. Using your brights can help you spot animals sooner, and the light reflecting off their eyes can reveal their location if hidden on the side of the road.

- Slow down in areas posted with deer crossing signs and in heavily wooded areas, especially during the late afternoon and evening.
- Watch for other deer to appear. Deer rarely travel alone, so if you see one, there are probably a few friends trailing closely behind.
- Do not swerve to avoid a collision. This could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and cause a more serious crash.
- If you do hit a deer, do not touch the animal. A frightened and wounded deer can be dangerous or further injure itself. Get your vehicle off the road, if possible, and call 911.
