“What does a boy band do when it grows up?” That’s the question the Jonas Brothers, Nick, Joe and Kevin, take a stab at answering in an interview with Out magazine, which touched on Miley Cyrus and twerking, those lingering gay rumors, and their new album, V.

It’s a question that seemed to weigh heavily on the minds of the Brothers J, interviewed in September for the November issue. The Jonas Brothers, you’ll remember, were a particular favorite of the Obama girls, Malia and Sasha, for whom the band performed as a surprise their first night at the White House in January 2009.

V is their fifth studio album, their first as a band in four years and their first since departing the embrace of Disney-backed Hollywood Records. Writer Sam Lansky says they were eager to discuss their artistic intent and their transition to adulthood, during which they also pursued solo careers with varying degrees of success.

Naturally, this being Out and they being a boy band, they talked about those “pesky” gay rumors. But shrugs all around from the brothers.

“We have a lot of gay friends and gay fans,” says Joe, 24. “It’s a boy band stereotype; people assume, but we don’t take offense….”(Being in Out) is a moment for us for sure. We keep saying, ‘Well, it’s about time.’ “

Nick, 21, adds that he used to be a “super theater geek. I loved theater and I still do, and I care about fashion, and I care about a lot of things that I feel like stereotypes are attached to.”

The brothers have matured, no question. “You get to this point where you can’t live your life trying to satisfy everybody, personally or as a musician,” Joe says. “Somebody’s going to find something negative. So we were like, let’s just be who we are and have opinions — whether it’s on politics or music — and really show who we are as people.”

Naturally, this being the era of ubiquitous Miley Cyrus, twerking came up. Joe says there are probably better ways for Cyrus to say she’s grown up, but at least everyone’s talking about her. Nick says he laughed at her “funny” performance, adding that Miley is a very smart cookie.
