Use this super spider hand puppet with your child while you all sing the Incy Wincy song!

Follow our step-by-step instructions to make a fabulously fun spider hand puppet!

What You Need:

  • Black foam, felt or card
  • A small round bowl or similar (as a template for the spider’s body)
  • 4 pipe cleaners (fold over & pinch the ends so no sharp points)
  • Round pen lid or similar (as a template for the 4 finger holes)
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors

Adult Prep:

1) On black foam make the spider’s body by turning the bowl upside down & pressing really hard to make an imprint. Then cut around the line

2) To make the 4 finger holes, use your small circular object (i.e. a pen lid) & draw around or press down to make the outline. Do this 4 times near the bottom of the spider’s body (remember little ones only have small fingers!)

3) Carefully cut the 4 finger holes out using scissors or a craft knife

4) Now make 2 holes on each side of the spider’s body for the remaining legs. Then make 2 holes near the centre for the mouth

How To Play:

With your child, thread each pipe cleaner through to make the 4 legs & the mouth

Finally, stick down 2 googly eyes!

There are lots of ways you can use this spider! You could –

  • Get your little one to learn how to put their fingers through the holes & wiggle the ‘spider’s legs’
  • Introduce/practise counting, for example by counting the 4 pipe cleaner legs & the 4 ‘finger’ legs to make 8 legs in total
  • Re-tell or sing the Incy Wincy Spider nursery rhyme & use the spider hand puppet as a prop – running up the drainpipe, being washed out & running back up again
  • Use it as a decoration/puppet – perfect for a Halloween or a bug-themed children’s party

Make It Easier:

Is your child too young to make this spider hand puppet? Make it yourself & try these ideas:

  • Use black & white as contrasting colours (e.g. large white eyes & legs) & move it over baby’s head to develop eye-tracking
  • As you sing the Incy Wincy nursery rhyme ‘climb’ up & down baby’s body with your fingers in the hand puppet. Give them a big tickle at the top

Make It Harder:

Is your child ready to stretch their imagination & language further? Try these ideas:

  • Make multiple spider hand puppets & get your child to use them to create their own puppet show or have a ‘drainpipe’ race
  • Make up another verse/new words or actions to the Incy Wincy rhyme
  • Research different types of spiders & make puppets to match, for example, a brown tarantula or a black widow spider with a red mark on its body

WHAT ARE YOU HELPING YOUR LITTLE ONE TO DO?

1. Develop speech & language skills through imaginary play with the puppet & by listening to & joining in with the familiar Incy Wincy Spider nursery rhyme 2. Experiment with different art materials, seeing what they can do with each item & practise using fine motor movements 3. Follow simple instructions given by an adult
