The new location on the corner of Woodward Avenue and West Pike Street hosts the second of two Roadkill Nights events in 2023, the first taking place several months ago at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Woodward Avenue edition will continue to host drag racing, a car show, the manufacturer’s midway, Dodge Thrill Rides, and much more.

The main attraction is, without a doubt, the street-legal drag racing on Woodward Avenue. Cruising Woodward has been a tradition in the Motor City for decades, and it became a phenomenon in the ’60s when the factory performance-driven era took off. Inevitably, that cruising often turned into an impromptu drag race—in fact, it has been well-documented that OEMs used Woodward as an unofficial proving grounds to test vehicles against local racers. MotorTrend turns the famed roadway into a legal dragstrip for this one night of motoring mayhem. Concrete barriers are dropped into place and the surface is prepared with traction compound for the rowdy Small Tire and Big Tire racing categories.

Last year, we watched famed HOT ROD Drag Week competitor Joe Barry drive his 3,000-hp 1956 Chevy Bel Air to victory in the Big Tire class. The Small Tire eliminator was dominated by the 6-second, 200 mph-capable Volvo station wagon of Mikael Borggren.

The excitement doesn’t just happen between the retaining walls of the makeshift dragstrip; fans can get in on the action themselves with the Dodge Thrill Rides. The new location allows for the continued drift and thrill ride courses featuring Hellcat-powered Dodge street machines. Pro drivers give rides to Roadkill fans as they roast the tires in a high-speed celebration of horsepower.
Tim Kuniskis, the Dodge brand’s chief executive officer, shared that “Roadkill Nights continues to evolve each year, with the Pontiac stop serving as the second of two Roadkill Nights events in 2023. Our little horsepower circus has grown from a grassroots event to a can’t-miss event for any true muscle car enthusiast.”
