What are the best beaches near Pittsburgh?

  • Presque Isle State Park
  • Conneaut Lake

Summertime means finding fun ways to cool off, especially on the hottest days of the season. One of the best ways to stay cool all summer long is with a visit to one of the many beautiful beaches near Pittsburgh. If you’re up for a drive of about two hours, make your way to Presque Isle State Park in Erie. It boasts more than a dozen sandy beaches, all leading into the crystal waters of Lake Erie. Take all of your beach gear, but that’s just the start of the fun. Fly a kite on the breezy shore of the lake and go searching for sea glass. You’ll find quite a bit of it on the sandy beaches.

Just about an hour and a half from downtown Pittsburgh, Conneaut Lake is another picture-perfect day trip. Stay cool in the clear lake, or check out the other amenities near the water including boating, volleyball nets, and a boardwalk. If you prefer to stay a bit closer to home, visit Raccoon Creek State Park. It’s about 30 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh and has a beautiful sand beach, a concession stand, and plenty of room to soak up the sun.

Are there any waterfall hikes in Pittsburgh?

On those summer days when the temperatures remain bearable, lace up your hiking shoes for a waterfall hike in Pittsburgh. You might be surprised to learn we’ve got quite a few of them, including:

  • Meadow Run Trail in Ohiopyle State Park. It leads to two beautiful waterfalls – Cucumber Falls and Ohiopyle Falls. Take your beach gear, too, because you can also slip down Meadow Run Natural Waterslide, a popular way to cool off all summer long.
  • The trek to Buttermilk Falls in Beaver Falls, which is short (around 10 minutes,) and you can cool off in the pool into which the cascade drops.
  • There’s another Buttermilk Falls, too, and that one is in New Florence. The hike to the spectacular waterfall is a bit longer, but you can walk behind the Buttermilk Falls and get absolutely drenched. It’s a fun way to stay cool on a hot day.
