Why Does Weed Make You Sleepy?

We all know the euphoria that comes with smoking weed, but dozing off after your smoke sesh could be an unexpected side effect too. Believe it or not, cannabis can make us feel sleepy due to its chemical compounds, or sedative effects, interacting with our brain.

Some people seek out that sleep aid effect specifically for insomnia and other deprivation difficulties, but not everyone wants to stay glued to their bed after medicating. Let’s take a deep dive into how weed makes you sleepy and ways to avoid drowsiness when medicating.

Our Endocannabinoid System

Everyone has an endocannabinoid system which is used to receive cannabinoids. One of the main receptors, CB1 has been shown to play a role in helping induce sleep. Since THC acts mainly on the CB1 receptors, it is no surprise that it can affect our sleep. It also can help increase melatonin production.

Interfering with Our Natural Sleep Cycle

Our endocannabinoid system also plays a prominent role in our circadian rhythm (or natural sleep cycle). When THC interacts with our brain, it can disrupt our circadian rhythm in various ways. Studies have shown an array of effects like prolonged sleep, deeper sleep, or a reduction in time it takes to fall asleep.

There have even been cases of sleep disturbances and vivid dreams in higher dosers who haven’t smoked in a while. Those who consume THC long term also have been shown to have decreased REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which is when you are dreaming and creating new memories. This isn’t a bad thing, as REM sleep can also be responsible for nightmares.

Ways to Avoid Drowsiness

  • Change what time of day you medicate. Medicating in the evening or right before bed can encourage drowsiness because your body is trying to go into rest mode.
  • Try eating a small companion snack or meal before or after you medicate.
  • Switch up your medicating method . Taking an edible has a whole different effect from smoking or dabbing, and usually hits the body all at once.
  • Try a different product. If you can’t break away from a particular strain, try a different product with that strain or a hybrid.
  • Try taking a lower dose. This is mainly for the low-dosers and patients newer to cannabis, but you might be “overdosing” by medicating with a higher mg than your body is used to. Stronger products are much more potent and may be delivering a more sedating experience.

While new studies of how cannabis affects our body and natural systems are constantly being released, we do know that THC can interact with our natural sleep cycle and overall energy levels – sometimes for better or for worse.

Time of Day

The time of day you choose to medicate can also affect your sleep wake cycle. If you’re looking for a deeper sleep, then great! Certain cannabis strains can be extremely helpful for those suffering from insomnia, PTSD, anxiety, and other stressors that may keep you from getting a full night’s rest.
