It’s no secret that the world can be a cruel and terrible place. We live in a world filled with wickedness, suffering, injustice, persecution, enmity, natural disasters, disease, death and all manner of mental, physical, emotional and spiritual abuse. The value systems of the world are now upside-down. Immorality and the individual state of the human heart is worse than it has ever been. People and society at large continue to become more wicked with each new generation. People are no longer as compassionate or considerate. People are becoming more self-centered, narcissistic and even abusive. Therefore it is easy to feel discouraged and depressed about the state of the world.
The awful state of the world and its hardships can lead many people into anxiety disorders, hypertension, substance or drug abuse and all kinds of other illnesses.
You are viewing: Why Is The World So Depressing
- Approximately 280 million people suffer from depression worldwide. (World Health Organization, 2022)
- Depression is the leading cause of disability in the world. (World Health Organization, 2022)
- Depression results from a complex interaction of social, psychological, and biological factors. People who have gone through adverse life events (unemployment, bereavement, traumatic events) are more likely to develop depression. Depression can, in turn, lead to more stress and dysfunction and worsen the affected person’s life situation and the depression itself. (World Health Organization, 2022)
Below are 2 root causes regarding why the world can be so depressing
1. The world is depressing because of the existence of sin Sin has a domino effect. Genesis 3:1-24 reveals that man sinned or rebelled against his Maker and therefore sin has existed from the time Adam & Eve ate from the forbidden tree in the garden of Eden. So the disobedience of Adam is the reason why sin exists and why the world is full of wickedness and hardships today.
Romans 5:12 says: Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Romans 3:10-11 says: None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
Romans 3:23 says: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Therefore the world is broken because mankind is broken. We are sinful and therefore our sins have terrible consequences in the world. Our sins not only have an impact on ourselves, but they directly or indirectly affect others too. Sin will always negatively affect our relationship with God and our relationship with others.
2. The world is depressing because the immorality of mankind is getting worse The Bible reveals that the last days will be a period of difficulty or hardships due to the worsening moral condition of humanity.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 says: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
In Matthew 24:12 Jesus said the following about the last days: “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,”
A similar situation happened during the days of Noah before God had to send a flood as judgment to destroy the entire world. The Bible reveals that during the days of Noah, man’s thinking and behavior was continuously wicked.
Genesis 6:5 NLT says: The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and He saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
Therefore a toxic and wicked environment ultimately leads to a depressed state of the world.
How Can We Cope in a Depressing World?
Life is not easy and the Bible acknowledges this fact. We cannot avoid problems, challenges or hardships. However we must discover ways to cope and deal with various kinds of issues in our world.
In John 16:33 Jesus says: “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Jesus says that even though the world is undeniably filled with tribulation, we must nevertheless trust in Him to help us overcome the trials and hardships of this world. Jesus Himself must be the source of our peace and tranquility in a world that is filled with chaos and toxicity.

In John 14:27 Jesus also says: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
In this fallen world real peace is not the absence of problems, but true peace is found in Jesus Christ even in the midst of a broken world. True peace is having the presence and direction of Jesus Christ even in the midst of trials.
Philippians 4:6-7 says: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Coping in a depressing world requires us to be in a loving relationship with Jesus Christ. We must be born again. We must focus on Jesus Christ who is our Saviour and not allow anything to separate us from our relationship with God.
Romans 8:35-39 says: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Conclusion
Ultimately there will come a time when God will reset the whole world. One day there will be a new heaven and a new earth. One day God will remove all hardship and suffering from the face of the earth and the world will be perfect again.
Revelation 21:1-4 says: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
