Wondering if Babylon is ok for kids or teens? I wouldn’t recommend it. Babylon is a tale of Hollywood in the Golden Age when silent pictures moved to talkies and when apparently everyone was snorting cocaine. Full of shock value and inappropriate content, Babylon is not for the teen crowd. Here’s what parents need to know in this Babylon Parents Guide.
Parents Guide to Babylon
Babylon traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. The film starts off with Manny (Diego Calva) Rayes who is the errand boy for Hollywood execs and stars in the 1920s. He has to push an elephant up a large hill all in the name of a good party.
At this party he is stricken by Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), a girl with a jersey accent who is destined to be a star. He also befriends Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), one of the biggest movie stars of his time. As Hollywood transitions and moves forward, some get left behind and cope differently with the aftermath.
Age Rating: Why is Babylon Rated R?
Babylon is rated R for graphic nudity, drug use, strong sexual content, language, and violence which means some content is not suitable for kids under 17.
Language in Babylon
There is a lot of profanity in Babylon including over 50+ uses of f*ck, f*cking, or motherfu*ker, uses of sh*t, a**, a**hole, bi*ch, and sexual words like c*nt, pu**y, co*ksucker, whore, and bastard. Words of Deity are also used like g-ddamn.
Mature Content: Is Babylon Appropriate for Teens?
I would not recommend Babylon for teens just for the sheer amount of sexual content, nudity, and drug use.

The first scene opens with en elephant defecating all over a man’s face and body, then the next scene is a woman urinating on an overweight man’s face (while he’s lying on the floor shirtless) as a means of a sex game screaming “Does Piggy like that?”
Next scene goes into an insane Hollywood party scene with topless women and people having sex everywhere. It’s pure chaos and nudity galore in Babylon. Characters are nude, spanking each other, performing sexual acts on each other, you’ll see vaginas, penises, pubic hair, etc. A little person jumps on a pogo stick shaped like a penis.
A female character performs a seductive song about “my girl’s pu**y.”
Many characters smoke, drink alcohol excessively, use drugs, and snort cocaine.
There is also some graphic violence including a character dying of a drug overdose, death by suicide, murder, and gunshots. There are blood spurts and blood all over a character.
A snake bites a character and they start frothing at the mouth and spasming.
A man eats a live rat.
There are anti-semitic and racist comments including making a black character rubbing charcoal powder on his face to make him appear more black.
Is Babylon Appropriate for Kids Under 17?
Babylon is pure debauchery with some cheesiness inserted about how a movie set is the most magical place on earth. Babylon is not for kids of any age.
Damien Chazelle also directed La La Land, which is one of my favorite films. So if you hated La La Land and thought it was too PG and musical, then maybe Babylon is for you.
Perhaps if Babylon stuck to fleshing out the main characters of Manny, Nellie, and Jack, I would have enjoyed it more. One frenzied scene where the three of them each contribute to the making of films in separate locations was fantastic. That made me appreciate cinema.
But everything else was just too much noise. It was the quieter moments that made me feel compassion and empathy. Maybe some people need the noise to help you appreciate the silence.
But then there was the ending. There are so many things I want to say. I really wish I had gotten to know Manny’s story better, because that ending was so abrupt. If you ever had the chance to ride The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, well the ending of the movie is like the end of the ride on acid.
Babylon was ambitious and for that I applaud it, but unfortunately, it just didn’t work.
