When Do Colosseum Tickets Go On Sale

Colosseum ticketing problems in 2024

Unfortunately buying official tickets for the Colosseum is fraught with problems. We provide instructions below, but you may encounter the following problems. Scroll down to see how to get tickets anyway.

For nearly three decades, the official ticketing supplier has been a company called ‘Coopculture’. They have never been particularly impressive in this role, and in 2023 they finally got fired so that the Italian Ministry of Culture can take the job back in house. However the transition is not going smoothly. This page will help you try to get official tickets, but if you are unable to overcome the hurdles put in your way, don’t miss out – have a look at the range of Colosseum tickets available from our approved reseller.

1. Official website is geoblocked by ‘Octofence’

Octofence firewall is blocking Colosseum ticket traffic from outside ItalyIn a move of almost staggering genius, someone in Coopculture has switched on a firewall called ‘Octofence’. According to some, this is an inadequate security service anyway, and likely someone’s changed the settings to make it even worse.

Octofence has intermittently been blocking access to Coopculture.it from outside Italy because “you’re connecting from a hosting provider IP address”. Well duh, how else would we connect?

Some people have reported switching to their cellphone network gets round this problem. Others have had no success and have had to buy from a reseller.

2. Lack of Colosseum ticket availability

To control the intense demand on tickets, the official Colosseum ticket site is supposed to release tickets every day, thirty days in advance. If you are on the official site at the right time and date, you may be able to get the ticket you want. However in 2024 people have reported that even this complex schedule is not being honored. E.g. in March 2024, there were no April tickets available.

3. Ticketing drip feed

How Colosseum tickets are supposed to be released on the official website – though as noted this is not currently being honored:

1. Tickets are issued exactly 30 days in advance, to the hour (Italian time). During this hour, there are four blocks of tickets issued: top of the hour, 15 minutes afterwards, 30 minutes, and 45 minutes.

E.g. for tickets available from 11 am on August 25th,, tickets will become available at Coopculture at 11 am (Rome time, which for example would be 5 am EST) on July 26th in the following blocks:

  • 11 am
  • 11.15 am
  • 11.30 am
  • 11.45 am

An hour later, tickets will be available for noon on the 25th August, etc. This happens every single day, always for tickets 30 days hence.

2. The same thing happens exactly 7 days before the visit time, with a smaller number of tickets.

3. And again 24 hours before the visit time, with an even smaller number of tickets available.
