When Does Demon Slayer Get Good

Demon Slayer (aka Kimetsu no Yaiba) is a massive hit both in Japan and internationally. The anime series, based on Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga, follows the adventures of Tanjiro Kamada and his sister as they fight to become demon slayers and get revenge on the forces that have harmed their family.

The show’s popularity stems from its exceptional action sequences, gorgeous art style and surprisingly emotional story.

Demon Slayer is currently available on Netflix and Crunchyroll internationally, but unfortunately, the former has decided to use its own numbering system for the show’s seasons, which can be confusing for fans unsure what to watch next.

Don’t worry, though: We’re here to help. The main thing to remember is that Netflix split season two into two parts.

Still unsure? Read our recommended watch order below.

Demon Slayer season one – Tanjiro Kamada, Unwavering Resolve Arc (2019)

Demon Slayer season one comprises the show’s 26 episodes and is where you should start. The show does a great job of establishing its world, roughly set in Japan in the early 20th century, and introducing viewers to many, many characters.

Although it mainly focuses on Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, whose family is brutally murdered by demons, season one has (like all good anime) a big ensemble cast of travelling companions and teachers, plus a few terrifying villains.

Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train (2020)

After season one, you should watch the Demon Slayer movie, Mugen Train, which picks up directly after the events of episode 26.

The film came out in 2020 and was a big success, breaking box office records globally and in Japan.

Demon Slayer season two – Mugen Train & Entertainment District Arc (2022)

Okay, so here’s where things get a bit confusing.

Demon Slayer season two’s first seven episodes essentially act as an extended retelling of the Mugen Train movie broken up into 20-minute chunks.

This version of the story is currently listed as ‘season two’ on Netflix, while the subsequent 11 episodes are listed as ‘season three’.

If you’ve watched the Mugen Train movie, then there’s no reason to watch these first seven episodes. You can instead just jump right to the brilliant Entertainment District Arc, which starts at episode eight.

Demon Slayer season three – Swordsmith Village Arc (2023)

After you’ve navigated the Mugen Train situation, you can move on to Demon Slayer season three (or season four if you’re watching on Netflix), the Swordsmith Village Arc. It’s shorter than seasons one and two but also features two extra-long episodes at its start and end.

And that’s it — for now. Demon Slayer was immediately renewed after season three finished airing, but no release date for season four has been given yet.

Demon Slayer: The Hashira Training (2024)

Ahead of Demon Slayer returning, the show is giving fans a taste of what’s to come in the form of To the Hashira Training – a limited-run theatrical release that includes the hour-long season-three finale with the opening episode of season four.

The ‘movie’ is currently out in cinemas, but we wouldn’t expect it to hang around for long. Demon Slayer season four is premiering on Japanese TV and Crunchyroll in Spring 2024.

Demon Slayer seasons one to three are available on Crunchyroll and Netflix, with the latter listing the show as four seasons. Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train is currently available on Crunchyroll or via DVD and Blu-Ray.

A basic Crunchyroll membership is free, giving you limited access to its library of shows (usually only subtitled versions) with adverts.

Crunchyroll’s premium tiers include £4.99/$7.99 for the ‘Fan’ tier, which lets you watch new shows without adverts just an hour after they air in Japan, and the ‘Mega Fan’ tier for £5.99/$9.99, which lets you download shows for offline viewing and stream on up to four devices at the same time.
