When Is Ant Season Over

When is Ant Season?

Though spring is usually the season when ants begin to make their presence known in our homes and other unwanted public spaces, there really isn’t a beginning or end to the ant season since ants technically can invade your home any time of the year. While the warmer weather we experience during this season creates ideal conditions for ants to colonize, there are steps you can take year round to prevent ants from invading your home or yard before you call us, your local pest control experts at United Pest Control.

Prevent ants from being attracted to your home with the following simple tips:

  • Reduce any potential bait attracting the ants to your home, front/back yard, and garage by keeping all areas free of leftover food crumbs, wrappers, overflowing trashcans, and sticky residues on surfaces.
  • Seal all trashcans with a lid and do your best to keep the outside surfaces free of trash residue as well. Keep pet food containers off the ground when not being used by your pet, being sure to clean them every once in a while to remove small leftover food particles.
  • When enjoying sticky treats like ice cream, watermelon, popsicles and the like over the summer, hose down any outside surfaces that were dripped or spilled on.
  • Ants are attracted to water and moisture as well so survey all water lines, gutters, hoses, and spigots for leaks or any sitting water and repair accordingly.
  • Believe it or not, ants are hunters and they are attracted to other bugs, dead or alive, just as much as they are to discarded or leftover food. So if your yard is a haven for other bugs due to untrimmed grass and bushes and piles of leave/sticks/branches take measures to control other bugs attracted to such environments, such as flies, spiders, beetles, worms, crickets, aphids, etc, as these bugs will then attract ants searching for food.
  • Even if you see just a handful of ants at first, know that the rest of the swarm are soon to come. Some will try to vacuum up ants but the problem with this is that the ants don’t die and are prone to becoming lodged in your vacuum canister if it’s not made with a dust bag that can be thrown away. With a soapy sponge or cloth you can wipe the ants away and rinse them down the drain. This helps stop the ants already in your home and cleans away the pheromones left behind which attract more ants to the location.
