For most, it goes best with French fries or on a burger or hotdog. It’s America’s favorite condiment: ketchup.
But all ketchups are not the same. Or so we thought going into this month’s taste test. Sentinel staff tried a variety of brands to see which was best, and for some, it was tough to tell the difference. The staff tried ketchup from Heinz ($2.49 for 20 oz. at Meijer), Meijer ($1.89 for 20 oz.), Our Family ($2.29 for 32 oz. at Family Fare) and Burman’s ($1.19 for 38 oz. at Aldi).

The brands were listed first to fourth as their favorites to least favorite, with a weighted numbering system being given to them and a winner chosen.
The favorite? Aldi’s Burman’s brand came out on top with 22 points. Second was Heinz with 19 points, followed by Our Family with 18 points. Meijer came in last with 11 points.

Sarah Leach, editor: Honestly, they all tasted very similar to me. I liked all of them.
Lori Timmer, features editor: This was harder than I thought it was going to be. I was sure I could easily pick out the only ketchup I will buy, but that wasn’t so. There was only one that definitely wasn’t my usual brand. But I picked Burman’s as the best — I thought it had the most familiar flavor (abut it wasn’t my usual brand).
Brian Vernellis, digital director: It was a close call between Our Family and Meijer, but Our Family had the best overall flavor — smoother, not as sharp as Burman’s and Heinz.

Kate Carlson, municipal reporter: As someone who loves ketchup, it was a little tricky to distinguish different flavors. Burman’s and Heinz tasted the same to me and weren’t too sweet.
Erin Dietzer, education reporter: This one was tricky because there weren’t too many differences between the ketchup, but I feel like Burman’s had the best blend of sugar, tomatoes and vinegar. Heinz wasn’t far behind.
Audra Gamble, crime reporter: I thought Heinz and Our Family were pretty close. They both had a good balance and weren’t too sweet. Both left a good tomato-y aftertaste, I just liked Our Family a tiny bit more.
Rich Lakeberg, design hub supervisor: All of them were surprisingly sweet. Heinz I feel is best because it had a good mix of sweet and tangy. A little vinegar kick is important. Our Family would have won out for me if not for the bitter aftertaste.
