Hit ITV cop drama DCI Banks has been cancelled after five years and fans of the police show are up in arms to say the least.

The crime show – starring Stephen Tompkinson, 51, as the titular Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks – has run since 2010 and frequently pulls in between 5 and 6 million viewers.
But ITV have decided not to renew the show for any more episodes despite the recent fifth series kicking off with over 6 million viewers.
‘After five series, ITV has taken the decision not to recommission DCI Banks,’ a statement for the broadcaster reads.

But fans of the show are disappointed and have taken to Twitter to slam the decision to cancel the show.

The above chap is kind of on to something there, however, as ITV did in fact recently poach the BBC’s former Head of Drama Polly Hill (responsible for giving us TV delights including Poldark and Wolf Hill).

DCI Banks was based on a series of books by author Peter Robinson.
The fifth and final series concluded on October 5th with the last episode pulling in over 5 million viewers.
