When Will Arch Manning Play

Not many college programs can say they’ve ever had two top-ranked quarterback recruits on the same roster. Texas football has both Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, though neither played for a two-week stretch for the Longhorns.

Ewers, in his second season as the Longhorns’ starter, missed the past two games with a shoulder injury. In Ewers’ absence, Manning, the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, has yet to appear. That’s unlikely to change in the Week 11 game vs. TCU following news from Steve Sarkisian that Ewers would start vs. the Horned Frogs.

Ewers’ return virtually precludes Manning from getting playing time. But the question remains: Why hadn’t Manning received a chance yet? He entered the season as the third-string quarterback behind redshirt freshman backup Maalik Murphy, who started both games with Ewers out.

Manning, a New Orleans native, enrolled early at Texas in January, meaning he’s nearly been with the football program for a calendar year. Here are the likely reasons Manning hasn’t played this season:

One likely reason why Manning has yet to appear this season is to preserve his redshirt (although he can appear in up to four games and still maintain a season of eligibility). Assuming Texas wins out and makes the College Football Playoff national championship game, Manning could play in four of the Longhorns’ remaining six games (including the Big 12 title game) and not burn a redshirt.

Also, with Ewers having two years of eligibility remaining after this season, Manning would’ve likely had to wait his turn anyway to start for the Longhorns.

Odds point to Manning seeing the field before then, as it’s unlikely for five-star quarterbacks (and especially the top-ranked signal callers) to stay all four, or even five years, of college. There’s a chance Ewers, a projected 2024 NFL Draft pick, forgoes his eligibility and enters the draft after this season. That would pave the way for Manning to start next season (if he can beat out Murphy).

Will Arch Manning transfer?

It’s obviously too early to tell, but there are a couple of factors that could play into Manning’s potential decision if it became an option for him.

First, if Ewers’ draft stock plummets and he’s forced to stay in school, Manning may not want to wait a few seasons before becoming a starter, although he could possibly take over for Ewers anyway as he continues to develop.

Another motion could be if Ewers leaves after this season and Murphy beats out Manning in the spring, prompting Manning to try his luck elsewhere before the fall starts with a new program. That said, his grandfather, Archie Manning, told The Spun on Friday that the latest in the family’s line of quarterbacks is happy at Texas:

“Every situation is different,” Archie Manning told The Spun. “I think the most unfortunate thing was that Quinn Ewers got hurt. He was having a great year. I think Maalik [Murphy] has done some great things filling in. Arch is happy with the decision he made. All the reports we get is that he’s doing well. He’s going to get a redshirt out of this year, and I think that’s important.”

Arch Manning recruiting

Per 247Sports’ Composite rankings, Manning was ranked the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit and No. 1 quarterback out of Isidore Newman High School in Louisiana. He also received a perfect 1.000 grade.

The 6-4 quarterback also visited Georgia and Alabama before choosing the Longhorns, to whom he committed to in June 2022.
