But we need to travel back to the origins of Mother’s Day to unearth the history of Father’s Day celebrations in the United States. In West Virginia, Anna Jarvis started the Mother’s Day movement by holding a small memorial service for her mother on May 12, 1907. Mother’s Day came from this start and is now commemorated every second Sunday in May in the United States.
Father’s Day is a little more complex, with two versions of its inception.
The first is that, in 1909, a Washington state woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at the Central Methodist Church in Spokane, Washington. Dodd was one of six children brought up by their widower farmer father, William Jackson Smart. He’d lost his wife, Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart, during childbirth in 1898.
Smart was a Civil War veteran, and Dodd felt a day was required to honor fathers. Dodd interrupted the sermon and then lobbied the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA to use her father’s birthday, the 5th of June, as a day for celebrating fathers.
The second version claims the idea for Father’s Day began in Fairmont, West Virginia. On July 5, 1908, Grace Golden Clayton suggested that fathers should be celebrated in services to her local Methodist minister. Her idea came after a mining accident had killed 361 men in the state in December 1907.
When Was Father’s Day First Celebrated in the United States?
Whichever you believe, Dodd’s determination saw her home state of Washington mark its first official Father’s Day the following year. The date was Sunday, June 19, 1910, later than requested by Dodd because of a crammed calendar.
The concept spread from state to state, but Father’s Day faced many more obstacles before it would become the established national holiday many of us enjoy today.
President Woodrow Wilson backed celebrating Father’s Day as early as 1913. President Calvin Coolidge took up the reins in 1924 but experienced an unexpected pushback.

Father’s Day was initially well-received, but it would take more than 60 years to be recognized as a national holiday.
Some dads considered the day a gimmick or Hallmark holiday invented for commercial gains. The 1920s and 1930s saw a campaign for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to be scrapped and replaced with a joint Parents’ Day.
The Great Depression and World War II were what propelled celebrating Father’s Day to national acceptance. Retailers were desperate to sell goods during the Great Depression, and Father’s Day represented an irresistible opportunity. World War II saw people keen to honor fathers serving overseas. Both further pushed the popularity of Father’s Day.
President Lyndon Johnson next picked up the Father’s Day baton. He declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. It was left to President Richard Nixon to make Father’s Day a national holiday in 1972.

What Date Is Father’s Day Celebrated Across the World?

How Many Fathers Are There in the United States?
The United States Census Bureau estimates there are around 72 million fathers across the entire country. Some 29 million fathers are grandfathers, too.
In 2021, about 24 million fathers of children younger than 18-years-old were married and lived with their opposite-sex spouses. There were around two million single fathers last year and an estimated 204,000 stay-at-home dads in the United States.
U.S. fathers are also more involved with newborns. Between 2016-2020, around 70% of men took leave within 12 weeks of the birth of their first child. That’s up from 20% between 1981 and 1985.

Mexico has its own way of celebrating Father’s Day, also known as El Día del Padre. Children often buy their fathers and grandfathers little gifts alongside homemade cards.
The country also commemorates its father figures on the third Sunday of June. Like most Mexican celebrations, there is a focus on family and Mexican food. People give gifts in much the same way as in the United States.
Typical presents include:
- Tequila
- Panama hat
- Silver goods like lighters or clips
- Cigars
- A traditional wedding shirt, called a guayabera
Barbecues are popular, with meat grilling essential, and some families take their dads to their favorite restaurant.
A significant number of Mexican fathers live and work abroad, so Father’s Day may involve a Zoom or Skype call to catch up with family.
There is also a famous 21-kilometer race (13 miles) half-marathon in Mexico City, called the Carrera Día del Padre 21K Bosque de Tlalpan. The most popular event is the father and son race.
When Did Mexico Start Celebrating Father’s Day?
Father’s Day started to gain traction in Mexico in the 1950s and has grown in popularity ever since. However, Father’s Day is not a federal holiday in Mexico, despite its importance in the calendar.
The day is still not as big as a Mexican birthday party or the festivities for Cinco de Mayo.
