Who Made God?

Theme: God has always been here and always will be.

Bible Reference: Genesis 1:1-2; Isaiah 43:10b; Revelation 1:8

You’ll need:
  • a Bible
  • alphabet cards from A to Z
  • both old and new pennies

Ask:

  • Who’s the oldest person you know? What’s the oldest object you own?

Say: Genesis 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” When do you think the beginning was?

Hold up an old penny (the older the better). Ask:

  • How old do you think this penny is?

Read the year on the penny to the children. Say: Name some things you know of that are older than this penny.

Have children each turn to someone and share their ages.

Ask:

  • How old do you think I am? (If you’re willing, share your age.)
  • How old do you think God is?

The Alpha and Omega

Open your Bible to Revelation 1:8, and show the verse to the children.

Say: The Bible tells us how long God has existed. Here in Revelation 1:8 it says, ” ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’ ” Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. What are the first and last letters in our alphabet?

Hold up the alphabet cards for the children to see. Give one alphabet card to each child.

Say: I want you to stand, hold your letter in the air, and say your letter of the alphabet when it’s your turn. We’ll start with A. Okay, go!

Have each child stand in turn and say the alphabet according to the card he or she is holding. For a little extra fun, you could have the children repeat the activity by saying the alphabet backward.

Note: If you have more kids than letters, have some or all children form pairs. If you have fewer kids than letters, let some children have more than one letter.

God Came First

After the alphabet has been said, have children sit down. Ask:

  • Who can tell me what letter comes before A?

Pause for children to answer. There is no letter before A, just as there was nothing before Godhe was always here.

Open your Bible to Isaiah 43:10. Say: Listen to what the Bible says in Isaiah 43:10: “Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.”

Say: Not only has God always existed, but he always will exist! That means that he was there for your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and he’s here for you right now. And God will be there for your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren-and even after that. Isn’t that great?

Ask:

  • When are some of the times you would want to know that God is with you?

Allow children to respond. As each child responds, reassure him or her that God will be there.

Close in prayer: Dear God, thank you for all the things in creation that you made. And thank you for always being there-in the past, in the future, and right now for us. You are an awesome God! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Give each child one old penny and one new penny as a reminder that God was there when the old penny was new and he’ll still be there when the new penny is old.
