Why Is Palkia A Water Type

So, as a lot of 4th generation fans may know. Palkia is the Spatial Pokémon and also a Water/Dragon type. A lot of fans have raged on and on about how Palkia’s type makes no sense. And even youtubers, like CandyEvie , have stated that Palkia and Lugia have the opposites type of Water and Psychic. Well, I’m about to disprove this.

Today’s theory will be about…

“Why is Palkia a Water type?”

Everyone who has played Pokémon Diamond and Pearl can agree with me in saying that at first glance, Palkia doesn’t really look like a Water type Pokémon. In fact, when a lot of people think about space, you don’t really think a lot about water.

Palkia’s move pull, however, could say otherwise. With being able to learn moves like Hydro Pump and Surf, it’s no question that this Pokémon is indeed of the Water type variety.

(I pulled these off of Serebii’s page on Palkia)

Now, back to our main Theory’s question, why is Palkia a Water type? A lot of people, despite seeing that Palkia can’t learn many Psychic type moves, say it should swap types with Lugia and become a Psychic type.

A lot of people say Lugia looks like it should be Water type, and Palkia Psychic type. They also say Palkia’s shiny leads it more into the Psychic type look.

While it is true Lugia looks like it should be Water type, Palkia shouldn’t be a Psychic type. For three reasons.

1. Move Pull

As I said before, Palkia has a very large move pull, and only 5% of it shows Psychic type moves that Palkia can learn, while 45% of it show Water type moves that Palkia can learn.

2. Space’s relationship to Water.

In case you don’t know, Space is very large, almost incredibly endless! Same thing with the ocean, which is made of Water. It is incredibly large, and most people that sail out into the ocean refer to it as vast and endless. Another thing that relates these two is floating objects in their midst. Especially in movies, Space is shown to have no gravity, (not counting going near the planets), so you can pretty much float in space, but where else can we float? In the water. Volume and Gravity are more similar to each other than people think they are.

3. States of Matter!

Here’s the big one. This is the main reason why I believe Palkia should stay a Water type. The Sates of Matter. As most Pokéfans know, Dialga is a Steel Type, Giratina is a Ghost Type, and Palkia is a Water type. What they don’t realize is that they actually represent the three states of matter!

They are all Dragon types, yes. However, their other typings play a big role in representing the three states of matter. And since Arceus is the god of all Pokémon, if you want to refer him like this, you could say he represents Plasma. There’s also the “matter”, (get it?), of the fact that these three deities were made to govern Time, Space, and Distortion in our world. If any of the these three dragons were to have been decimated or altered in any way, life wouldn’t go on. Just like how we need all three states of matter to shape our world.

Also, Palkia’s the mascot of Pokémon Pearl, and Pearls are most commonly found in the ocean.

And that, my friends, is why I believe Palkia should stay a Water type and not become a Psychic type! Please type what you think in the comments below and who do you think has a more unreasonable typing, Palkia or Lugia?
