What Is Unicorn Spit

INSTRUCTIONS

Use Unicorn SPiT as a paint, gel or stain on most any material. Create masterpieces on wood, glass, metal, fabric, pottery, concrete, laminate, wicker and most other substrates.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:

  1. SHAKE WELL and test small area before use.
  2. Apply with a brush, foam pad, or other tools. Dry time depends upon thickness of the application
  3. Dry time is approximately 30-60 minutes (depending on material, humidity and temperature) or until a chalky finish appears. Unicorn SPiT dries quickly. Use a spray bottle of water to keep product from drying out and to easily manipulate.
  4. Once dry, use Famowood Glaze Coat or other non-water-based coatings to protect, add gloss and dimension. For outdoor projects, make sure to protect your masterpiece with oil-based finishes or coatings that indicate they are adequate for outdoor use.

LAMINATE OR OTHER NON-POROUS SURFACES (THAT CAN BE SANDED): Sand the surface with 220 grit sand paper after cleaning, then dust well before applying.

POLYMER CLAY APPLICATIONS:

  1. Bake polymer clay per manufacturer’s directions.
  2. Allow clay to completely cool.
  3. Apply Unicorn SPiT directly onto the baked polymer clay with a fine-tip paint brush. If applying Unicorn SPiT SPARKLiNG, it is recommended to apply a white base coat of Unicorn SPiT, let dry and then apply SPARKLiNG.
  4. Allow to dry (approx. 30-60 minutes).
  5. Reapply Unicorn SPiT if desired.
  6. GLASS OR OTHER NON-POROUS SURFACES (THAT CANNOT BE SANDED): For best results, mix Unicorn SPiT with a WATER-BASED decoupage before applying to glass. For a solid/non-transparent color, use a 1:1 ratio of Unicorn SPiT /decoupage. For more transparent color (stained-glass style) results, use 1 part Unicorn SPiT to 4 parts decoupage. Apply mixture directly to glass and let cure completely. To add durability to the exterior of regularly handled items, spray a light, NON-WATER-BASED clear coat over project and let dry.

FABRIC USE*:

  1. Stamping method: Use Unicorn SPiT full strength for “stamping” (creating design on a separate surface and then “stamping” it on to a fabric project). Then, use a water bottle and a brush to blend
  2. Direct to fabric projects: Mix Unicorn SPiT with 3-7 parts water in a spray bottle or cup and brush it on, drip it on or spray it on.
  3. Washing: Unicorn SPiT will keep most of its color if treated before washing (see various methods below). Let the dyed fabric dry for 24 hours before washing. For best results, wash in cold water by hand (use very little laundry detergent). Rinse with cold water. Various methods to increase the colorfastness of the Unicorn SPiT before washing are as follows:

FOR MORE PERMANENT RESULTS:

  1. E6000 Fabri-Fuse: Mix 1 part Unicorn SPiT with 3-7 parts E6000 Fabri-Fuse. Dry flat for 5 hours. Washable after 72 hours. *This WILL change the texture, durability and feel of the fabric.
  2. Fabric Medium: Mix a Fabric Medium with Unicorn SPiT according to instructions on the Fabric Medium bottle.
  3. Non-water based fabric protectant: Let Unicorn SPiT dry. Apply protectant. Allow to dry as indicated on product. Let set for 24 hours before washing.

FOR SEMI-PERMANENT RESULTS:

  1. Hair Dryer: Let Unicorn SPiT dry. Use hottest blow dryer setting to heat fabric until fabric is hot. Allow fabric to cool back down to room temperature. Let set for 24 hours before washing.
  2. Iron: Let Unicorn SPiT dry. Put iron on hottest setting (without moisture). Lay wax paper over fabric. Iron front and back of fabric until hot. Allow to cool back down to room temperature. Let set for 24 hours before washing.
  3. Vinegar: Put fabric with dried Unicorn SPiT in cold water/vinegar mixed at a 1:1 ratio. Let fabric set in vinegar/water mix for 24 hours. Rinse with cold water and a very small amount of laundry detergent immediately after removing from water/vinegar solution. Lay flat to dry.
  4. Clothes dryer: Put fabric with dried Unicorn SPiT in dryer for 1 hour on hottest setting. Remove and allow fabric to cool to room temperature. Let set for 24 hours before washing.

*Zia is not a colorfast color. Use other colors if project will be exposed to moisture.

NOTE: If a more washed-out look is desired: Let dyed fabric dry for 24 hours (without using any colorfast method). Then, machine wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Machine dry if desired. A protectant method can be used if no further color loss is desired. It is recommended that you keep dyed fabric using Unicorn SPiT separate from other clothing until the project has been made colorfast. Configuring Dilution Ratios: To choose the dilution rate that fits your needs, first test a small area using the same material as your project.

Recommended dilution ranges:

Treatment / Application Type Water Dilution Ratio PAINT / HEAVY GLAZE or ANTIQUING/DRY BRUSHING 0-10% LIGHT GLAZE / LIGHT WHITE-WASH/LIGHT ANTIQUING 10-30% WOOD STAIN (BARE WOOD)/DYE FOR STAINED SURFACES 30-50% DISTRESSED WOOD (BARE WOOD) 50-70% FABRIC (Up to 85% water for spraying) 60-80% CONCRETE 0-90% GLASS 0-30%

NOTE: Distilled or purified water is recommended rather than hard or high mineral water.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AS A PAINT, HEAVY GLAZE, or ANTIQUING/DRY BRUSHING ON WOOD, GLASS, METAL, FABRIC, POTTERY, WICKER, CONCRETE & LAMINATE:

  1. SHAKE BEFORE USING.
  2. Use Unicorn SPiT right out of the bottle for a paint application or dilute it up to 10% with water for antiquing or dry brushing. Diluting Unicorn SPiT with water allows you to control the opaqueness. For antiquing or dry brushing, add 10 parts Unicorn SPiT in a re-sealable container to be diluted with water. Test the dilution on a small, dry, clean sample piece of the same substrate as your project, gradually adding up to 1 part water until the desired effect is achieved.
  3. Apply the diluted Unicorn SPiT to the surface once it is completely void of all oil, sealer, dirt, grime, paint, stain, or anything that may inhibit the product from contacting the bare surface.
  4. Continue to add or blend multiple colors to the surface in separate areas creating designs to achieve the desired look.
  5. Allow to dry. Dry time is approximately 30-60 minutes (depending on material, humidity and temperature) or until a chalky finish appears.
  6. After drying, lightly buff the surface with a fine grain sand paper (120-220 grit) or extra-fine steel wool (following the grain) to remove any excess or clumps.
  7. Dust off thoroughly.
  8. Seal with FAMOWOOD GLAZE COAT or most any oil-based coating/sealer. For better protection and a higher gloss, repeat coats of sealer as indicated on the product’s instructions. High gloss sealers will help achieve a three dimensional look.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AS A LIGHT GLAZE, WHITE WASH OR ANTIQUING AGENT:

  1. SHAKE BEFORE USING.
  2. Dilute Unicorn SPiT up to 30% with water to make a light glaze, white wash or antiquing agent. Diluting Unicorn SPiT with water allows you to control the opaqueness. Add 10 parts Unicorn SPiT in a re-sealable container to be diluted with water. Test the dilution on a small, dry, clean sample piece of the same substrate as your project, gradually adding up to 3 parts water until the desired effect is achieved.
  3. Apply the diluted Unicorn SPiT to the surface once it is completely void of all oil, dirt, grime, paint, stain, or anything that may inhibit the product from making contact with the surface to antique, age, paint, highlight or lowlight.
  4. Continue to add multiple colors to the surface in separate areas creating designs to achieve the desired look or blend colors as desired.
  5. Once dry, use a soft (dry or damp) cloth to polish away Unicorn SPiT until your desired effect has been achieved.
  6. Apply to unsealed chalk or mineral style paint to create custom color highlighting and lowlighting before sealing.
  7. Allow to dry. Dry time is approximately 30-60 minutes (depending on material, humidity and temperature) or until a chalky finish appears.
  8. Seal with FAMOWOOD GLAZE COAT or most any oil-based coating/sealer. For better protection and a higher gloss, repeat coats of sealer as indicated on the product’s instructions. High gloss sealers will help achieve a three dimensional look.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AS A STAIN OR DYE:

  1. SHAKE BEFORE USING.
  2. Dilute Unicorn SPiT up to 50% with water to make stain. Diluting Unicorn SPiT with water allows you to control the opaqueness and absorption into the porous surface. Add 10 parts Unicorn SPiT in a re-sealable container to be diluted with water. Test the dilution on a small, dry, clean sample piece of the same substrate as your project, gradually adding up to 5 parts water until the desired effect is achieved.
  3. Apply the diluted Unicorn SPiT to the bare surface once it is completely void of all oil, sealer, dirt, grime, paint, stain, or anything that may inhibit the product from making contact with the bare porous surface.

TIPS TO CREATE VARIOUS FINISHES:

Intermingle chalky paint finishes or metallic spray paint with Unicorn SPiT to achieve unique finishes. Top coats or finishes must be oil-based. Water-based coatings will alter the look of Unicorn SPiT.

CUSTOM COLORS:

Most water-based paints (chalk style or mineral based) can be mixed with Unicorn SPiT to create custom colors.

TINTING FAMOWOOD GLAZE COAT EPOXY RESIN WITH UNICORN SPiT:

Use Unicorn SPiT as a tinting agent to add brilliant color (or Unicorn SPiT SPARKLiNG for color AND sparkle) to epoxy projects. Famowood Glaze Coat High Gloss Finish or Famowood Glaze Coat High Gloss CRAFT Resin is recommended. For all other brands, test before use.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Measure and mix Famowood Glaze Coat High Gloss Finish or Famowood Glaze Coat High Gloss CRAFT Resin as directed.
  2. Quickly add drops of undiluted Unicorn SPiT to achieve your desired color. DO NOT use more than 1 part Unicorn SPiT to 5 parts epoxy. Remember…A tiny bit of Unicorn SPiT goes a long way.
  3. If multiple colors are desired, gather smaller containers to work with in advance. Then measure, mix and pour Glaze Coat epoxy immediately into smaller containers and add Unicorn SPiT.
  4. Pour tinted epoxy onto your project and finish your masterpiece! For best results, a pour thickness of no more than 1/16” is recommended.
  5. Please follow epoxy pouring, curing and clean-up instructions.
