Is Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves Kid Friendly?

A charming thief, Edgin (Chris Pine), and his partner Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) are trying to get a pardon for all the things they’ve stolen. A tad impatient, they bust out of prison and get together a band of unlikely heroes to undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic and get back Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman).

Things go awry when they encounter their old “friend” Forge (Hugh Grant) who was supposed to be taking care of Kira and instead has inserted himself as her father figure. Forge has formed an alliance with a dangerous wizard. What happened to his honor? Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.

Parents need to know that the new Dungeons & Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves, can get scary and intense for young kids with some dark creatures and evil characters.

Age Rating: Why is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Rated PG-13?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is Rated PG-13 for Language, Action, and Fantasy Violence which means some content may not be suitable for kids under 13.

Language in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

There is some profanity including words like sh*t, bi*ch, damn, hell, bastard, prick, and words of Deity. For the most part, it was moderate.

Violence: Is Dungeons & Dragon Honor Among Thieves Too Scary for Kids?

Although much of the action is fantasy violence and some is used for comedic purposes, certain scenes can be intense for kids. There are plenty of jump scares and dark characters performing evil acts.

You can expect fighting with swords, axes, and other weapons and will see beheadings and characters murdered and injured. One scene includes characters essentially getting electrocuted. Scary creatures kill and eat some characters. One scene feels very Hunger Games.

Another scene includes dark magic and colored mist killing people and showing them foaming at the mouth while they die.

Skeletons and corpses are brought back to life for a funny scene but some parts are gross.

Is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Appropriate for Kids Under 13? Parents Guide

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, you can expect to see some fighting, death, mature topics, jump scares, and profanity used by some of the characters. To sum it up, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is kid friendly for ages 12 and older. I’d even recommend it for kids 10 and older if they love playing the game or love action-adventure comedies.

There isn’t necessarily anything inappropriate for children besides the above, but some jokes and humor will go over young kids’ heads and may not that interesting for them. If you’ve got nerdy kids, then they’ll probably enjoy it! I sure did, and I’m a total geek.

You don’t need prior knowledge of the Dungeons & Dragons game to have fun this film. All I knew was what I learned from Stranger Things. That’s why I was surprised at just how much I laughed.

The cast is a joy and the mix of characters provides a comedic impact without making the film overboard cheesy. Zingers and one-liners can sometimes grow a little weary, but most of the time the jokes land.

At first, I was a bit confused at the backstory and different worlds with the characters, the creatures, the band of thieves, and the purpose. The buildup was necessary (but may be where you lose some kids), and then the action got really good. Visually, it’s not the most enticing fantasy world, but I quickly learned, I wasn’t here for the visuals.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves feels like a mash-up of your favorite movies. A little Princess Bride, a little Lord of the Rings, but it also packs an emotional punch. By the end, I was all in, and the final battle scene was pure perfection.

Perhaps it’s most relatable because this crew of heroes are semi-outcasts in their own communities and have found each other as an unlikely family. May sound cheesy, but it was anything but. This film serves the fans, and it serves the newbies. I also appreciate that they did not make it overtly crass, so families can watch together.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a blast! It’s unapologetically weird and charming and won over my non-DnD-playing dorky heart. Now sign me up to learn how to play the game.
