Hearties might be one step closer to discovering the real person who shot Lucas in the next episode of When Calls the Heart. What happened to Lucas, and who shot him? Here’s what to know before watching Season 11, Episode 5, “Stronger Together.”

When Calls the Heart is Hallmark Channel’s drama series following Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley (now named Hope Valley), a small coal-mining town in western Canada. The show, which premiered in July 2014, is based on Janette Oke’s novel of the same title from her Canadian West book series. Season 11 of When Calls the Heart premiered on April 7 on the Hallmark Channel.

McNally plays Lucas Bouchard, a businessman who owns the Queen of Hearts saloon and Gowen Petroleum in Hope Valley. He was introduced in Season 6. Lucas and Elizabeth start dating in Season 8 and get engaged in Season 9 after Elizabeth’s breakup with Nathan Grant, a Mountie whom Elizabeth has a romantic storyline with following the death of her late husband, Jack Thornton, in Season 5.

The When Calls the Heart Season 10 finale ended with Elizabeth and Lucas breaking up because they wanted different things in their lives. Lucas wanted to move to Capital City to continue his campaign for governor, while Elizabeth wanted to stay in Hope Valley.

After winning the Governor race and leaving Hope Valley for Capital City, the Season 11 premiere revealed that Lucas had been shot by an unseen assailant. Thankfully, Lucas survived the attack, and in the four months that followed Nathan was part of a special investigative team to find the person who shot him. Clayton Pike, a seasonal worker, was captured and confessed to the crime. Despite this, neither Nathan nor Bill believed he was guilty.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, McNally was asked whether he believed Pike’s confession. He responded that his character “wants [the investigation] to go away and move on.” Until there’s new information, “he’s considering it case close because he has to compartmentalize. He’s very stressed out this season. …He’s just got so much on his plate.”

McNally also reacted to fans who think Lucas remembers what happened and is converting it up. “As far as I’m concerned, he’s not lying,” said McNally, adding, “I also don’t think he’s too eager to try and remember and go down that path because he has so much on his plate. If it comes back, then I think that’s helpful. He really did smack his head and has nothing to offer.”

However, a new teaser for Season 11, Episode 5, airing on May 5, suggests that Pike isn’t the one who shot Lucas. Rosemary tells Lucas that “the real culprit is still out there” after she and Bill find a new clue about the suspect. “I do remember something,” Lucas says in another clip from the preview.

In the comment section for the YouTube teaser, some fans surprisingly turned on Lucas. “I really like her and Nathan both are more suited for each other. Lucus has too many secrets” one person commented. “Lucas doesn’t really convince me that he has changed” another added. Meanwhile, others still have hope that he and Elizabeth will get back together one day. “Still team Lucas, no way you have a love like that & just drop it, nothing against Nathan,” another user added.

In this Sunday’s episode, Elizabeth will also ask Lucas about Jeanette Aucoin’s claim in Episode 4 that they were also previously engaged. “So, were you engaged,” Elizabeth asks Lucas, who confirms that he was but explains that he didn’t tell Elizabeth because he “just wanted to leave [his] past behind [him].” To which Elizabeth responds, “But it keeps finding you.”

The difficult conversation comes after Lucas’s old friend Jeanette unexpectedly pays Lucas a visit to Hope Valley in Episode 4. Some fans think Jeanette’s appearance is a way to end Lucas and Elizabeth’s romantic chapter for good. Hearties will have to wait and find out.
