F1bb Goldendoodles are the last version of the first generation of Goldendoodles. Preceding the F1bb are the F1 and F1b. In fact, F1bb Goldendoodles are my personal favorite! Maybe because my Goldendoodle, Nash, is one, but I promise not to be too biased. So what is an F1bb Goldendoodle? How is it different than the other generations of Goldendoodles? I’ll answer these questions and give you some insight on F1bb Goldendoodles to see if an F1bb Goldendoodle is right for you!
F1bb Goldendoodle History
Let’s start from the beginning. The original or F1 Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed between a standard Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. The F1 is 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle. The F1b came after the F1 when breeders wanted to make a less shedding version and one that inherited more Poodle genes. The F1b incorporates 15% Golden Retriever and 85% Poodle genes. Even after the F1b, people wanted an even more, less shedding version of the Goldendoodle; thus, the F1bb variation occurred. The F1bb Goldendoodle originated when breeders wanted to create a Goldendoodle that would shed less, be more “hypoallergenic,” and have a Goldendoodle that would inherit more of a curly coat compared to the F1 & F1b. An F1bb Goldendoodle is bred between an F1b Goldendoodle and a standard Poodle. So the F1bb has approx. 12.5% Golden Retriever genes and 87.5% Poodle genes.

The jargon associated with the different versions of the Goldendoodle can be confusing. I explained in my articles for the F1 & F1b Goldendoodles that the “F” means filial, or “one” or “offspring”. The number 1 indicates that it is the first generation. The “b” represents backcross. Backcrossing is when a hybrid breeds the same breed as one of its parents. For example, an F1b Goldendoodle is when an F1 Goldendoodle (hybrid) breeds with a Standard Poodle. So the F1bb Goldendoodle is a double backcross, with one parent being an F1b and the other being a standard Poodle.
F1bb Goldendoodle Appearance
The appearance of an F1bb Goldendoodle isn’t drastically different than the F1 or the F1b. The F1bb will indeed have more Poodle genes, so their coats will be wavier or curlier than their previous versions, but they will still come in the same coat colors. Furnishings on a dog are the fluffy beard, hairy eyebrows, and mustache. They give the dog a “teddy bear” look. The F1bb Goldendoodle will almost always have these furnishings since they are more closely related to the Poodle and have an F1b Goldendoodle as one of their parents. The Poodle is the one that carries the furnishing gene.
The Pictures above show Nash (on the right in both pictures), my F1bb Goldendoodle, and his sister, Jade, also an F1bb Goldendoodle. Nash has a more wavy coat, but still has curls. Jade has a more curly coat and is also a lighter cream color.

The “non-shedding” aspect of the Goldendoodle is one of the most important factors why people get the breed. I emphasize “non-shedding” because it’s not necessarily true. All Goldendoodles shed, but in way lesser quantities compared to other breeds. One of the reasons people choose an F1bb Goldendoodle over an F1 or F1b, is due to the amount of shedding. Genetically speaking, F1bb’s should shed the least between all three variants because they are closer to Poodle genes than the others. The shedding of the F1bb Goldendoodle is VERY, VERY minimal, making them great for people with mild allergies. Even though the differences in shedding between each variation of Goldendoodle might be small (especially between the F1b and F1bb), they are still there.
In conclusion, F1bb Goldendoodles are one of the more popular variations of the Goldendoodle breed due to their less shedding coat and more Poodle-like qualities. I can personally attest to the shedding aspect since I have an F1bb. I hardly ever see any of his hair laying around and the times that I do, it’s in very small amounts hidden away somewhere. This is what makes the F1bb Goldendoodle so great for people with mild allergies because they get an almost nonshedding pup, while getting all the same characteristics and personalities of all the other Goldendoodle variations.
