What Happened In Chesnee South Carolina

Spartanburg County School District Two is grieving the loss of three Chesnee High School students who died in a fiery crash on Fairview Road near Chesnee late Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified Tuesday night as Jeffery Scott Wallace, 18, of Chesnee; Vladimir Matthew Rybinski, 17, of Cowpens and Vitaliy Gregoriy Rybinski, 15, of Cowpens.

“Our collective thoughts and prayers are with the Wallace and Rybinski families,” Superintendent Lance Radford said in a statement released Tuesday night. “Our hope is that they find comfort in knowing that everyone in our district is thinking of them and is here for them.”

The S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck occurred around 3:36 p.m. Friday when a car traveling east went off the left side of Fairfield Road, “hitting a ditch and some trees.”

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Wallace was a front-seat passenger, and both Rybinskis were rear passengers.

Clevenger said Tuesday that his office consulted a forensic pathologist and odontologist, who made positive identification of the victims.

Chesnee played Landrum in high school football Monday night in a game originally scheduled for Friday but postponed after the fatal crash.

Immediately following the game, a 40-21 win by Chesnee, coach Clay Lewis gathered his team to talk not about the victory or about being 5-2 overall or 2-0 in the region but about family.

“We’re all one family,” Lewis said. “The community, Chesnee High School and the football team here, we’re all one heartbeat.

“… Especially after the events of the weekend, we know that some things are more important than football and sports. We had a tragedy here at the school. I thought our kids handled it as well as they could. Our prayers go to the families and those young men lost. We’re thinking about them right now.”

School officials on Monday made counselors and mental health experts available to students and staff to offer support, according to the district’s statement.

When students returned Monday, more than a dozen pastors also offered counseling to those who asked.

“For as long as is needed, we will continue to offer whatever support our students and staff at Chesnee High School need as they grieve the loss of their classmates, students and friends,” the District 2 statement read. “Jeffrey, Vladimir and Vitaliy will forever be Chesnee Eagles.”
