What Does Merchi Mean

Olga Carmona had million of viewers around the world squinting to view the message she had written on her shirt after scoring Spain’s opening goal in Sunday’s World Cup final against England.

After 30 tense and largely even minutes, the Spain No.19 broke the deadlock, benefiting from the space vacated by Luzy Bronze after the left-back had conceded possession near the halfway line.

Teed up by an astute pass from Maria Caldentey, Carmona delivered a crisp, low, left-footed shot that arrowed into the far corner and beyond Mary Earps who has enjoyed such an outstanding, reputation-enhancing tournament.

As she wheeled away in celebration, Carmona revealed a message on the shirt underneath her Spain jesey which simply read ‘Merchi’.

Written in black marker pen, the word was difficult to detect but, rather than a political message, Merchi represented a tribute to the mother of a friend who had passed away just days earlier.

The goal, itself, represented a tough moment for Bronze who has given so much to the England cause over the course of her illustrious international career but evenher former teammate, Alex Scott, struggled to issue a defence for her lack of discipline.

She said: ‘This one kills me as everyone knows how much I love Lucy Bronze. You can’t give the ball away in that area of the pitch and they overloaded us down that side. It’s a great finish but it comes from that mistake.

‘Spain are so intelligent, they know how to pick the right pass and overload the right areas.

‘Lucy Bronze has appeared in big moments and her team need her in the second half.

‘England should not feel sorry for themselves. With this performance England have still managed to create huge chances in this game. England have been in this position before and it’s about regrouping and know what’s coming up.’
