Who Owns The Mucky Duck

Marcus Johnson, owner of Mucky Duck Pub and Mallard Mobile Food Truck in Ames, recently opened a new shop, British and American Foods and Gifts, at 328 Main St., Suite 15.

Johnson had the idea to open the shop in the summer. While Mucky Duck Pub does have retail items available, it can be hard for customers to browse the selection when it gets crowded, Johnson said.

Another aspect that helped Johnson’s decision to open the store, happened in late summer. Johnson said that his food truck goes to Des Moines during the Christmas season for Christkindlmarket. During this time, he also usually has a retail section set up.

After purchasing extra Christmas items to sell at the market, Johnson found out in late summer that his retail section had not been approved.

“I’d already thought about doing this (the retail shop), but that was what really motivated me to do it,” Johnson said.

Christmas is a busy time for their retail items, so the store has kept fairly busy since opening in November, Johnson said. Looking past all of the Christmas items, the shop’s walls are also lined with tea, chocolates, hot sauce, tea kettles and much more.

Now that Christmas is over, Johnson is looking to continue maintaining the store and adding different products as it gets going.

This is Johnson’s third business, and he admits that it is a lot of work to keep them all running. His days typically consist of starting off at Mucky Duck Pub before heading to the British and American Foods and Gifts shop on Main Street, which is housed in the same building as Downtown Deli.

Johnson said that he tries to be at Mucky Duck Pub as often as he can to talk to the customers and catch up with the regulars that frequent it. Those regulars, in turn, also make their way to Main Street to see the British and American Foods and Gifts shop.

Some of his customers live in North Ames, and if they can not make it to Mucky Duck Pub to browse the retail selection, they now have a shop closer to them, Johnson said.

The shop has only been open for a few weeks, so there is still some work he wants to put into it in the coming months, Johnson said.

“I’m not totally happy with the selection right now, so I want to sort of get that better first, and really build our identity a bit more,” he said.
