Who Owns Greate Bay Country Club

Woodcrest CC in Cherry Hill and Greate Bay CC in Somers Point have changed hands with plans for enhancements. Woodcrest, which is to remain a private club, could add a fitness center, spa and an indoor/outdoor pool. Other options under the new group that’s led by the owners of an amusement-center chain include pickleball courts, an arcade room and a “kids club.” Near the Jersey Shore, Frank Ruocco says he and his partners, who most recently opened the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, “are committed to introducing a new level of hospitality to Greate Bay through future reinvestment in the club, its amenities and team members.”

A group led by Randy and Patricia Lahn, who own the Funplex chain of amusement-centers, will pay an undisclosed amount to buy Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill, N.J., the Cherry Hill Courier-Post reported. The 178-acre club has been owned since 2018 by First Montgomery Group, a Marlton-based development firm that acquired the landmark for $10.1 million in a 2013 bankruptcy auction. C+RB reported on that change of ownership in 2013.

The club, founded in 1929, has a golf course, a restaurant and private meeting space, the Courier-Post reported.

Randy Lahn, a Woodcrest member and the son of a former Club President, vowed to take Woodcrest “to the next level, creating a world-class family experience,” the Courier-Post reported.

“Woodcrest played a significant role in our family for generations, and I am thrilled to make it a formal piece of our legacy,” he said in a statement.

Woodcrest, which is to remain a private club, could add a fitness center, spa and an indoor/outdoor pool, the Courier-Post reported. Other options include pickleball courts, an arcade room and a “kids club,” his statement said.

Lahn said a “multi-year investment” would begin early next year with upgrades to three of the 18 holes on the club’s golf course.

Lahn, who began his career in amusements with a miniature golf course and driving range, oversees Funplex locations in Mount Laurel; East Hanover, Morris County; and Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Courier-Post reported. The Funplex sites offer indoor and outdoor attractions, including amusement rides, water parks and dining.

Lahn also operates a realty firm with his name, the Courier-Post reported. The ownership group includes Brian Williams, CEO of the Funplex Amusement Centers, and Patrick Lucas, Woodcrest’s Director of Operations.

First Montgomery Group sparked a controversy after acquiring Woodcrest with a proposal to put 844 apartments, including 160 affordable units, on part of the lush property, the Courier-Post reported. The firm later agreed to sell the site’s development rights to Cherry Hill for more than $4 million.

C+RB reported on plans to protect the property from redevelopment in 2015.

In Somers Point, N.J., Greate Bay Country Club is under new ownership, the Press of Atlantic City reported. Led by Frank Ruocco and a group of partners, the new team is set to take the club’s hospitality to the next level, Liza Costandino said in a statement.

The group has more than 30 years of successful partnerships under their belt and most recently was credited with opening Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, the Press reported.

“Thanks to Mark Benevento’s leadership for the last 18 years, Greate Bay has flourished as a vibrant private club,” Ruocco said. “My partners and I are committed to introducing a new level of hospitality to Greate Bay through future reinvestment in the club, its amenities and team members.”

The club opened as Ocean City Country Club in 1923, the Press reported. The original golf course was designed by the world’s first professional golfer, Willie Park Jr., and has attracted celebrities and golf enthusiasts from across the world including Arnold Palmer, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, among others.
