BIG CHANGES FOR CALIFORNIA CITY

Over the past six months, California City has experienced significant changes with the new City Council taking the lead. From policy updates to strategic purchases and staffing, our community is on a path towards greater success. One notable change is the end of our dependency on the Antelope Valley-East Kern (AVEK) Water Agency, which has imposed exorbitant fees on construction projects for decades, hampering our development.
PREPPING FOR CHANGE
With the upcoming Inland Port in Mojave, it is crucial for us to be prepared. We have been revamping our policies to streamline development and attract investments. Extending fee reductions on new home permits has enticed builders to pursue new projects. Additionally, California City has embraced the Permit Streamlining Act, facilitating progress and opening doors to the opportunities that await us.

FIXING PROBLEMS IN STEPS
For years, California City has struggled with various issues that have impeded growth. However, we are now breaking larger problems down into smaller, manageable parts to achieve our goals. Take, for instance, our battle against the high fees imposed by AVEK. After diligently pushing for change for over two years, we have finally gained City Council consensus to remove these fees. We are now working on fixing our broken wells, constructing a water storage facility, and creating a risk management plan to ensure the sustainability and reliability of our water infrastructure.
Moreover, we have addressed the shortage of housing for senior citizens by refurbishing vacant units at Desert Jade senior housing. Volunteers have played a vital role in making more units available to seniors facing housing insecurity. Additionally, we are planning to build more senior housing units soon, expanding our footprint to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. By having an in-house housing manager, we can achieve cost savings without having to rely on expensive consultants.
Exciting recreational projects are also in the works, including a new skatepark, splashpad, and clubhouse. These projects are currently in the bidding process, and we anticipate groundbreaking by the end of this year, with completion expected by Summer 2024. We have also invested in a new reed cutter to restore Central Park’s former glory by clearing overgrown cattails. Furthermore, the grounds surrounding City Hall are now properly maintained, and grant funding is on its way to support updates in and around our city’s administrative center.
DEVELOPMENT LEADS TO JOB CREATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Building new houses not only provides homes but also creates jobs through the construction industry. This, in turn, stimulates economic growth as businesses provide goods and services related to the new housing developments. As California City’s population grows, businesses are attracted to the area, leading to more transactions that drive opportunities for all. By making solid economic policy decisions, the City Council can foster further development, ensuring sustainable economic growth.
CITY HALL STAFFING
We have made significant progress in staffing our city departments. With the addition of a Public Works Director, Planning Director, Human Resource Director, Police Chief, and Fire Chief, we have achieved a more effective and competent team. By relying less on costly consultants and developing in-house expertise, we have already experienced substantial cost savings. In the coming years, these savings will amount to millions of dollars.
MOVING FORWARD
To thrive as a community, we need to focus on bringing more jobs to California City and reducing our reliance on consultants. After years of overcoming obstacles and removing impediments, I am proud to say that California City is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. We are committed to our community’s well-being and prioritize public safety, job creation, economic development, essential infrastructure, senior housing, and recreational activities. Together, we will build a dream of a better, more vibrant, and engaging community.
