How Clean Leather Gloves

Some categories of work require much more use of the hand than others. As a result, the hands are exposed to various risks and potential work accidents such as burns, perforations, abrasions or even cuts. For these workers, wearing protective gloves is essential.

Why care for work gloves

leather work gloves are exposed to a variety of soils daily (stains of oils, dust, paints, chemical products, etc.). Clean work gloves are essential to inhibit the proliferation of bacteria and thus provide good hygiene for the wearer. Gloves, depending on their type of use and the desired comfort, are made of various materials such as leather, nitrile, latex, kevlar and many others.

How to care for leather work gloves

Leather is a comfortable, robust and antifungal natural material ideal for making PPE or Personal Protective Equipment. However, this material can quickly lose strength and flexibility if it is not properly maintained. There are several types of natural and chemical products that can be used to maintain your leather gloves. Some gloves become clean by simply rubbing them with soapy water or Sommires clay, while others, such as suede gloves, require specific products. Washable or non-washable leather, suede or nubuck or even smooth, here’s how to take good care of your natural leather gloves.

Don’t forget to soften the leather of your gloves

Whether your leather is washable or not, no matter how it looks, leather needs to be rejuvenated and softened. To soften your leather, put on the gloves or place them in a mold so that your gloves are well stretched. Apply and gently rub a cotton ball soaked in castor oil or petroleum jelly on the glove. These fats can darken the color of the leather. Let them dry in a cool place away from the sun or the moon to prevent your equipment from fading.

A little trick to rejuvenate your leather glove made from aging lamb or cattle. Prepare a solution of lemon and egg white, thoroughly rub the surface of the leather with this mixture and wait for it to dry. Once completely dry, apply a moisturizing milk or a colorless waxing balm, the same as you use for your skin, to rejuvenate and give your equipment a little extra shine.

How to clean moldy leather gloves?

Leather gloves, often exposed to humidity, are susceptible to deterioration by the development of mould. Instead of waiting for mold to appear, why not prevent it.

Prevent the appearance of mold

Mold thrives in damp, poorly ventilated environments. It is therefore best to dry your leather gloves well before storing them to prevent mold from forming on the leather. Mildew occurs when water collects in the folds of leather. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated place. Finally, a basic rule to avoid the appearance of mold stains on the leather is to clean it regularly with the right products designed for this purpose. This regular maintenance helps to inhibit the development of mould, but it also helps to rejuvenate and soften the leather of your glove.

Mould cleaning

Take a cloth and a soft bristle brush. Use a rag to remove as much mold as possible. Let the leather dry completely if the mold is wet before cleaning. For optimal cleaning and to prevent the reappearance of mould, use a special leather shampoo without adding water. Rub the cleaner thoroughly with a soft cloth over every nook, crease and seam of your gear. Once the entire surface is clean, dry it gently with a soft cloth. Moldy leather can give off strong odors so it is best to apply an anti-odor product after cleaning.

How to wash your leather gloves?

Suede or smooth gloves, washable or not, here is how to properly wash leather gloves according to the different types of soiling.

Washable leather gloves

If your gloves aren’t too dirty, you can clean them with soapy water. Float them with a small, soft brush or damp sponge. If the instructions or packaging say your gear is hand washable, simply scrub with soap and cold water. Put the gloves on while they’re still damp to help them maintain the shape of your hands.

For dirtier washable leather gloves, mix a solution of white vinegar and water in the same amount. Spray the solution on your gloves and let sit for a few minutes. Then, lightly rub the gloves with a damp cloth. Finally, pat the gloves dry. Then spray a mixture of glycerin, water and black soap to protect your gloves.

If your leather gloves are dirty, you can use glycerine soap to clean them. If, on the other hand, the gloves are dirty and full of fat, apply a sommires earth and let it rest and act all night. Shake your gloves in the morning and they will be clean.

For your information, Sommires earth is an ecological and economical product ideal for removing greasy and grimy materials. Thanks to its great absorption capacity, it eliminates residues from non-washable surfaces and encrusted in folds. The work is limited, because no friction is required, it acts alone and requires a little exposure time.

Non-washable leather gloves

Non-washable leather gloves require special care. Do not clean them with water

To take good care of them, you must first clean them with a soft brush and then pass a cotton ball over the leather with make-up remover mixed with white vinegar. Rub well the parts hidden under the folds. When cleaning, it is best to put them on to stretch the leather and avoid creases.

How to clean white leather gloves?

Clean the white glove by dusting the dirty area with flour. Leave to rest for 1 hour then dust off. You can also clean your gloves with Blanc de Meudon (a natural powder rich in calcium carbonate used for cleaning). Let stand overnight. Wipe off the next day and shake.

What not to do

  • Leather should never be left exposed to the sun or moon
  • Failing to follow the washing and maintenance instructions prescribed in the instructions
  • Wash the leather gloves in the washing machine
  • Clean the leather with solvent
