WHERE NO ONE STANDS ALONE

INTRO.: A song which reminds us that the Lord has promised to stand with us, strengthen us, and deliver us is “Where No One Stands Alone” (#113 in Hymns for Worship Revised). The text was written and the tune was composed both by Thomas Mosie Lister (September 8, 1921 – February 12, 2015), who was an American singer and Baptist minister. He was best known for writing the Gospel songs “Where No One Stands Alone,” “Till the Storm Passes By,” “Then I Met the Master,” and “How Long Has It Been?” As a singer, he was an original member in The Statesmen Quartet, the Sunny South Quartet, and the Melody Masters. In 1976 Lister was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Southern Gospel Music Association in 1997. His songs have been recorded by nearly every Southern Gospel artist.
“Where No One Stands Alone” was copyrighted in 1955 by Mosie Lister Songs, was renewed in 1983 by Lillenas Publishing Company, and is now administered by Music Services Inc. Among hymnbooks published by members of the Lord’s church for use in Churches of Christ, it has appeared in the 1977 Special Sacred Selections edited by Ellis J. Crum; the 1971 Songs of the Church, the 1990 Songs of the Church 21st Ed., and the 1994 Songs of Faith and Praise all edited by Alton H. Howard; The 1978 Hymns of Praise edited by Reuel Lemmons; the 1978/1983 Church Gospel Songs and Hymns edited by V. E. Howard; the 1992 Praise for the Lord edited by John P. Wiegand; the 2007 Sacred Songs of the Church edited by William D. Jeffcoat; the 2009 Favorite Songs of the Church and the 2010 Songs for Worship and Praise both edited by Robert J. Taylor Jr.; and the 2012 Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs edited by Steve Wolfgang et. al. Stanzas 3 and 4 have been added.
The song covers the gamut of being alone in sin to being with Christ in eternity.
I. Stanza 1 mentions darkness
Once I stood in the night with my head bowed low,
In the darkness, as black as could be;
And my heart felt alone and I cried, “Oh Lord,
Don’t hide your face from me.”
A. Darkness is often representative of sin and evil: Jn. 3:19-20
B. In such circumstances we feel all alone as if no one cares for our souls: Ps. 142:4
C. Even the Lord hides His face from those who are guilty of iniquity: Isa. 59:1-2
II. Stanza 2 refers to riches

Like a king I may live in a palace so tall,
With great riches to call my own;
But I don’t know a thing in this whole wide world
That’s worse than being alone
A. One may live in a palace as did King Darius: Dan. 6:18
B. And one may have great riches as did King Solomon: 1 Ki. 3:11-13
C. But such things cannot fill the need of one who is alone because they are vanity and vexation of spirit: Eccl. 2:4-11
III. Stanza 3 talks about a home with Christ
Let me live in a small, humble cottage below;
Help me sing of God’s joy and His love.
May I live with a hope of a home with Christ
When He comes back from above.
A. Even though we may live in a small, humble cottage below, we can still sing of God’s love: Rom. 5:8
B. And we can live with the hope of a home with Christ in heaven: 1 Pet. 1:3-5

IV. Stanza 4 speaks of standing with the Lord on high
Then someday I will stand with my Lord on high,
When I’ve passed from the world of men;
And I’ll sing with the saints knowing that I will
Not be alone again.
A. Someday we shall have passed from the world of men and stand before the throne: Matt. 25:31-32
B. Then we shall sing with the saints of all ages: Rev. 5:8-10
C. And we’ll never be alone again because God Himself will dwell with us: Rev. 21:1-3
CONCL.: The chorus asks the Lord to stand with us at all times.
Hold my hand all the way, Every hour, every day,
From here to the great unknown.
Take my hand; Let me stand
Where no one stands alone.
Sometimes in this life we find ourselves, for one reason or another, having to stand alone. But even in such times, faithful Christians can take comfort in the knowledge that our Lord will always be standing with us. Therefore, I assume that in a right relationship with Christ is the place “Where No One Stands Alone.”
