The Rawlings Platinum Glove™ and Team Defense Awards for the 2022 season have been announced, and it’s a big win for the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. Jose Trevino, the catcher for the Yankees, and Nolan Arenado, the Cardinals’ third baseman, have been awarded the prestigious Rawlings Platinum Glove Award. The winners received their awards at the 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony, held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
Arenado’s Sixth Consecutive Platinum Glove Award
This is the first Rawlings Platinum Glove Award for Trevino, while Arenado has now won this award for a remarkable sixth consecutive time. In fact, Arenado is the first player ever to secure six Platinum Glove Awards. He is also the first infielder to begin a career with ten consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards®. It’s an incredible achievement for both players.

How the Winners Are Determined
The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners are determined through a combination of votes from an adjusted SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) for each of the ten Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners in each league and worldwide fan votes. Fans had the opportunity to vote for their favorite defenders on Rawlings.com between November 1 and November 9.

Scott Bush, the CEO of SABR, expressed his admiration for both Trevino and Arenado, stating that they are some of the best defensive athletes in the game today. The fans have demonstrated their knowledge and expertise by selecting them as the Platinum Glove Award winners for 2022.
Rawlings Team Defense Award
In its third year, the Rawlings Team Defense Award utilizes a statistical formula called SDI, which combines various defensive metrics. It takes into account factors such as batted ball location-based data, play-by-play accounts, and advanced analysis. This year, the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals were recognized for their exceptional team defense.
Mike Thompson, Rawlings’ Chief Marketing Officer, praised both teams for their outstanding fielding prowess. The Yankees and the Cardinals showcased their immense talent, with both teams having five Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists and two winners. The Yankees led the American League in defensive efficiency, while the Cardinals ranked first in the National League in defensive runs saved and outs above average. The Cardinals also committed the fewest errors in their league.
