Only a day after Season 24 of The Voice went live, three singers’ hopes of winning were left dead in the water. In Tuesday’s Top 12 Results Show, a trio of contestants was sent packing ahead of the Semi-Finals (next Monday at 8/7c on NBC). But did the unlucky threesome include Team Reba McEntire’s frontrunner Ruby Leigh, who’d stumbled on Monday? Team Gwen Stefani’s teenage dream Tanner Massey, whose vocals weren’t quite as big as his aspirations? Or Team Gwen’s poor Kara Tenae, who scored the worst in the poll that followed TVLine’s recap of Monday’s performances?
Before we found out, Gwen ran through her meh new single “True Babe” in the plastic-flower department at Michaels, and Reba sweetly sang “Seven Minutes in Heaven” in front of the backdrop JCPenney hangs behind your kid for their fall photo session. And in the moment of truth…

WILDCARD INSTANT SAVE
Jordan Rainer (Team Reba), “Blame It On Your Heart” — Grade: B | You knew Jordan was serious when she whipped off her trademark sunglasses to look us in the eye and deliver her rendition of Patty Loveless’ oldie with conviction enough to make us wonder whether we should’ve been frequenting honkytonks all these years. Can’t fathom why she’s singing for the Save and BIAS is safe!
Azán (Team Legend), “No Tears Left to Cry” — Grade: C+ | Aw, phooey. I like Azán a lot, but former coach Ariana Grande’s hit didn’t play to her strengths — in other words, that sunny quality to her voice. This felt a little urgent and overeager and sounded… not the contestant’s best. Tellingly, rather than comment on his team member’s performance, John commented on her journey and charisma.
Tanner Massey (Team Gwen), “More Than Words” — Grade: N/A | Nope. I’m not gonna be mean enough to grade the poor kid on his Extreme cover. Suffice it to say, he got off on the wrong foot, then proceeded to stumble. Painfully. Gwen understated the train wreck of it all by observing that “there was a little tuning” to be done and reminding him that he has his whole life ahead of him. And hey, don’t forget great hair.

Kara Tenae (Team Gwen), “Love Takes Time” — Grade: C | Tackling Mariah Carey, Kara careened into pitchiness early on and, sadly, never altogether careened back out. Not the showstopper that she needed. So glasses or no glasses, I had a hunch that Jordan had this one in the bag. Gwen, meanwhile, insisted that her contestant’s performance had been amazing. By comparison to Tanner’s maybe…
