Kids can be amazing at lacrosse, but let’s face it, they can also be a bit smelly. We understand that cleaning their gear may not be their top priority, but it’s essential for good hygiene and maintaining a pleasant environment on and off the field. Furthermore, neglecting to clean lacrosse equipment can lead to health issues like athlete’s foot, jock itch, and even staph infections. So, if you want to keep your kid’s skills shining on the field while avoiding any unpleasant odors, here’s how to clean their lacrosse gloves effectively.
Don’t Make This Mistake
One crucial rule to remember: never leave your equipment closed in your bag after a game, practice, or tournament. Doing so will trap odors, promote bacterial growth, and leave your gear wet for the next use. Not to mention, it will make your bag smell awful! So, never, under any circumstances, leave your sweaty equipment in your bag.

Getting Down to the Cleaning Process

Now that you know what not to do, let’s focus on the actual cleaning. There are two methods you can use: handwashing or machine washing. If you choose to handwash, fill a large container (such as a tub, sink, or bucket) with warm water. Add an appropriate amount of detergent, similar to what you would use for a standard load of laundry. For extra smelly gloves, you may want to use a bit more. Place the gloves in the container and gently massage the soap into the material, ensuring all areas are covered. Give it a good 10-15 minutes, then lay the gloves out to dry in a well-ventilated area.
For machine washing, check the tags on your equipment to confirm that it’s machine washable. Set the machine to the delicates cycle and add the recommended amount of detergent. Once the cycle is complete, we still recommend air drying the gloves. However, if you prefer machine drying, use the delicate cycle to avoid any damage.

To enhance the cleaning process, we recommend using Sweat-X, an activewear-specific detergent designed to eliminate tough stains and odors, even from unconventional materials. Sweat-X offers various products like stain removers, odor removers, and their new Max Odor killing detergent.
We understand that cleaning may not be the most exciting task, but taking the time to clean your kid’s lacrosse equipment will ultimately make their experience more enjoyable on the field.
