“Vehicle service” and “automobile maintenance” can be quite vague and nebulous terms. This can also be true of “transmission service”. Some guides and manuals, along with technicians, may not explain it properly. They may not want to. Sadly, sometimes less-than-honest technicians can use general terms like this to obfuscate what they’re really doing (or not doing).

Most of us are aware that our transmissions, like our vehicles as a whole, need regular service and maintenance. But we usually do not think about our transmissions unless there is a problem. And then, even when somebody does take the time to explain what transmission service entails, we may not be able to fully understand them. So, what does transmission service actually mean?

Transmission service

Transmission service is a term that can cover a number of different actions and checks. And these checks and actions are very important to ensure a long life for your transmission free of problems and incidents. A big part of transmission service is checking your transmission to make sure it’s running at optimal levels. If not, technicians can detect and repair minor problems before they become major ones.

Any half decent garage will include an inspection as part of their regular transmission service. But at Mister Transmission, we pride ourselves on our multi-check inspection. We methodically check the different parts of your transmission to make sure everything is running at peak levels. Actually, we check it twice: once by a center manager and then again by a technician, thus ensuring that the results of the check are accurate.

But what does the multi-check inspection actually consist of? Well, there are four parts:

• Transmission Fluid Check

The fluid check indicates the first sign of possible wear and tear. A clear red fluid shows that a transmission is in good working order. If the fluid is discolored or has unpleasant odour, this is usually an indication of internal wear and damage. If so, an internal inspection is required.

• Road Test

The road test consists of two segments: a stationary test and a driving test. Every position of the transmission is thoroughly tested for slipping, noises, harsh, soft or erratic shifting, and late or early shift patterns.

• Lift Inspection

During the lift inspection/diagnosis our technician will check the following:

• Neutral Switch
• Engine RPM
• Throttle Linkage
• Modulators
• Transmission Mounts
• U-Joints
• Fluid Retention
• Electronic Controls

This will determine if a minor adjustment will correct the transmission problem.

• Pan Examination

The pan examination gives us a partial look inside your transmission. Metal particles and friction material are expected to be in all pans. At least in small amounts. That said, a superfluous amount indicates internal wear and damage. In some cases with an excess amount of material in the pan, a minor adjustment will not be able to correct the problem. In such cases, we will recommend Mister Transmission’s inspection service. This service will determine exactly what is wrong inside your transmission.
