A Girl and an Astronaut Season 1 Ending Explained

The series revolves around three central characters: Marta, Niko, and Bogdan. Niko and Bogdan, both highly skilled Polish fighter pilots with a longstanding rivalry, find themselves competing not only for Marta’s affection but also for a spot in a space mission conducted by the Russian corporation, SkyCom. Ultimately, Niko is chosen for the mission, only to meet with a catastrophic event that leads to his alleged demise. However, thirty years later, he unexpectedly returns to Earth, appearing unchanged in age. His reappearance disrupts Marta’s marriage to Bogdan and raises difficult questions about his mysterious disappearance.

Before Niko’s departure, Marta had chosen him as her partner. However, as he failed to return as promised, she gradually grew closer to Bogdan. It was Bogdan who informed her of Niko’s supposed death in an explosion, possibly to secure her for himself or sparing her from the anguish of never knowing Niko’s fate.

Why didn’t Niko age in space?

Throughout the season, more information emerges about the secretive mission. Niko’s lack of aging in space is attributed to his sub-hibernation state, induced by cryogenics. He aimed to use the stem cells harvested during Niko’s sub-hibernation to cure his daughter’s developing ALS.

This endangers Niko further when Davidov’s research proves the experiment’s futility and Niko’s lack of scientific utility. The Russian state attempts to eliminate Niko, but he manages to escape, reuniting with Marta.
