So, let’s talk about A Girl & Her Guard Dog, a popular manga series that is now being adapted into an anime. However, this series has stirred up quite a bit of controversy due to the relationship dynamic between the two lead characters. Isaku, the female protagonist, is the granddaughter of a yakuza boss and is striving to live a normal life. But when she enrolls in high school, her guardian from childhood, Keiya, disguises himself as a fellow teenager to protect her. However, it becomes apparent that his real motive is to prevent her from dating boys her age.

The controversial aspect of this dynamic lies in the fact that Keiya has taken on a paternal role in Isaku’s life. There are flashbacks that depict their family dynamic, which can make some readers uncomfortable. Unlike similar stories where there is an age gap between romantic leads, this plot point borders on being incestuous and has elements of grooming. As the story progresses, Keiya’s obsession with Isaku becomes increasingly apparent, bordering on yandere territory.

Despite these problematic aspects, it is understandable why teenage girls are drawn to this series. The allure of a handsome and dangerous man who is obsessed with a cute and innocent young girl is a common trope in romance. The series plays up the protection angle, which is precisely what makes this type of romance addictive. The idea of softening a powerful and dangerous character can be intoxicating and often sells a lot of books. Many authors, such as Colleen Hoover and Sarah J. Maas, have built successful careers based on similar dynamics. Even shojo mangaka before this series, like Vampire Knight, have used this theme.
While I personally find this manga problematic, I believe it still has its place. However, it is crucial to have open conversations with teenagers who are reading or watching this series. It is important to address the controversial elements and discuss them in a responsible manner. In terms of age relevance, I would recommend this series for high school students, as it has become increasingly spicy in recent volumes. Currently, it is not in my school library, but I am open to acquiring it if students request it. I anticipate an increase in demand, particularly with the announcement of the anime adaptation, which has been generating significant attention on social media.
