REVIEW
It’s no secret that Amy Harmon is one of my absolute favorite authors. I’ve eagerly devoured every single book she has written. So, it goes without saying that I was eagerly waiting for the release of A Girl Called Samson. What drew me to this book, apart from it being a new Harmon release, was the intriguing backdrop of the American Revolutionary War. The blurb promised a fantastic story and the chance to get to know a truly fascinating character. Needless to say, the book did not disappoint.
One of the things I love about Amy Harmon’s work is her ability to surprise her readers. She seamlessly delves into different genres, catering to a wide range of readers. Yet, what remains consistent is the sheer quality of her stories and the impact her characters have on the readers. A Girl Called Samson falls solidly into the genre of historical fiction, focusing on the American Revolutionary War and the extraordinary true story of Deborah Samson. Harmon masterfully intertwines both true and altered historical details, creating a goldmine of information for readers interested in the day-to-day events during the war as well as Deborah Samson’s life.
The story starts at a slightly slower pace, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the details presented. Personally, I appreciated the deliberate pace as it made it easier to absorb the rich historical information, while also allowing me to gradually get to know Deborah Samson better. From the very beginning, I was enchanted by her character. Deborah’s development throughout the story is impeccable, and her interactions with the rest of the cast are genuine and believable. She becomes the sturdy foundation on which the entire story is built. Female soldiers during the American Revolutionary War are not often talked about, which makes A Girl Called Samson truly special.

This story beautifully explores personal growth, the daily struggles of war, loss, and family. While there is a slightly heavier focus on religion than I personally prefer, it adds depth to the narrative. The diverse cast of characters brings humanity to the events of the war and prevents the story from being a mere neutral account. As with any Harmon book, there is a touch of romance, though it is less prominent in A Girl Called Samson. Instead, readers are treated to an exquisite slow-burn romance that takes its time to reveal itself. Personally, I appreciated the gradual build-up, as it made the final payoff all the more satisfying. However, I can understand why some readers may find it challenging to balance the historical fiction and romance elements.
Overall, A Girl Called Samson is a highly satisfying read, despite a few minor blips. While it may not be my absolute favorite Amy Harmon book, it is undoubtedly a fantastic piece of historical fiction. The book offers a wealth of information about the American Revolutionary War and the remarkable life of Deborah Samson. If you enjoy historical fiction brimming with historical facts, a captivating cast of characters, and a hint of romance to sweeten the tale, then A Girl Called Samson is the perfect book for you.
