A Heartfelt Farewell: A Girl Named Tom Honors Their Father’s Memory

Sibling trio Girl Named Tom, who won Season 21 of The Voice, recently announced the passing of their beloved father, Chris Liechty. Chris had been bravely battling terminal cancer, with Josh (24), Caleb (26), and Bekah Liechty (20) openly sharing their father’s journey during their time on the show. On January 30th, the group took to social media to share a heartfelt video with their fans.

In the emotional video, filmed backstage at The Holland Theatre in Bellafontaine, Ohio, Bekah expressed her gratitude for the support they had received. She said, “We just wanted to come out here and say thank you so much for all of your condolences, sympathy, kindness that you’ve showered us with [through] this whole process.”

Caleb explained that they had chosen to proceed with their scheduled shows, despite their father’s recent passing. “Yeah, we have three shows the weekend after our father passed. You may be wondering, ‘Why would we do that?’ We are too, sort of,” Caleb shared. “But we went to get them out of the way so we can really throw ourselves into processing his death and planning his memorial service, which is coming up next weekend. So, that’s really important to us.”

Despite canceling just one show, the trio acknowledged the difficulty they faced in continuing their performances. Joshua revealed that their father had encouraged them to go on. “He really wanted us to do these shows,” Joshua said. “He was talking about his death, and he was like, ‘Do not let my death deter you from doing these shows.’ He didn’t get his wish on Thursday night; we canceled one. Sorry, dad.”

Their father’s memory remains a guiding force for the trio. Joshua expressed, “He’ll be with us tonight. And so we’re just happy to be able to sing while we’re still here, and sing for him, and for everybody else, too.”

Throughout their father’s battle with cancer, Girl Named Tom kept their fans informed about his condition. After their victory on The Voice, they revealed that his health had worsened and promptly returned to be by his side. Their decision to share their journey with the public resonated deeply, as they performed Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” in his honor on the show.

“…And just to share that, that’s a part of real-life too, and not everything is rosy, you know. And as we’re having successes, we’re also having, like, sorrow at the same time. And to kinda like give people a look at that,” Bekah shared at the time.

Shortly after their triumph on The Voice, the trio appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where they recounted the poignant moment of being reunited with their family after their victory. Bekah expressed, “Not even 24 hours after we won The Voice on that stage, we got to be in the hospital room with our Dad, all of our family together, and that was very surreal just to share that moment with them.”

Caleb added, “They were a huge part of getting us through the experience of The Voice, and so to go back and like share love with them in that room was so special.”

Looking ahead, Girl Named Tom has plans to release new music in 2022 and hopefully embark on a tour. However, for now, the siblings will take the time to mourn the loss of their beloved father.

The touching story of Girl Named Tom serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience that can be found in the midst of sorrow. Their unwavering dedication to their father’s wishes and their ability to use their music as a way to honor his memory is truly inspiring. As their journey continues, their fans eagerly anticipate the new music that will undoubtedly be filled with both joy and heartfelt emotions.
