The Art of Filming Steamy Scenes

Cinemas around the world, including Vietnam, have pushed boundaries with daring and provocative scenes. According to filmmakers, steamy scenes should strike a balance between artistic expression and the dark corners of a character’s soul, capturing the intricacies of complex emotional and psychological lives.

In 2009, the movie “Bẫy Rồng” (Dragon Trap) made headlines with its hot and intense scenes between actress Ngô Thanh Vân and Johnny Trí Nguyễn. Prior to this, the duo had already shared steamy moments in the film “Dòng máu anh hùng” (The Rebel).

The combination of exceptional action scenes and scorching hot moments in “Bẫy Rồng” garnered enthusiastic response from audiences. Rumors of a real-life romance spread like wildfire. Johnny Trí Nguyễn revealed that it took them more than ten hours of filming to achieve just one minute of a steamy scene.

More recently, the television series “Quỳnh búp bê” (Quỳnh the Doll) sparked debates over its realistic 18+ scenes. Director Mai Hồng Phong clarified that 99% of those scenes were faked.

One famous film notorious for its explicit 18+ scenes is the 1976 movie “A Real Young Girl”. Directed by Catherine Breillat, who currently serves as the President of the Jury at the Locarno Film Festival 2019, this daring debut marked her reputation.

The film was even categorized as soft-core pornography due to its frontal nude scenes and explicit portrayal of sensitive body parts.

Breillat’s hot and controversial creation told the story of a 14-year-old girl’s journey to explore her own sensuality. Later on, the director incorporated controversial steamy scenes as a recurring theme in her meaningful stories.

Whether for financial gain or pure artistic expression, participating in steamy scenes always comes with certain limitations. One major concern is the loss of control when exposing one’s body in front of tens or even hundreds of people on set. Aside from the embarrassment, the inability to manage physiological responses during such intimate contact is a significant challenge.

To address this issue, directors and actors must utilize “secret” props that the audience cannot detect. These include nude-colored undergarments that tightly hug the body, adhesive breast covers, and protective clothing for male actors.

In a steamy bathroom scene, actress Andrea showcased her perfect figure. Little did people know that she used ultra-thin adhesive breast covers for a natural and worry-free performance, ensuring no wardrobe malfunctions.

Realistic steamy scenes in movies hide artistic intentions.

Another example is the Vietnamese film “Mỹ nhân kế” (The Lady Assassin), where Diễm My 9X wore a daringly cut outfit. Even when the dress came close to revealing too much, she did not hesitate, as she had utilized nude-colored protective underwear for that scene.

Even foreign actors involved in steamy scenes have to practice and use strict props. Apart from protective clothing, they often wear 3-4 layers before shooting their scenes.

To capture the most authentic moments, props today are designed to be increasingly flexible. Male actors wear flesh-colored tights while female actors use panty liners – a thinner alternative to sanitary napkins – or even adhesive tape for a more genuine appearance.

In addition to props, the skilled combination of subtle effects and careful camera angles chosen by the director plays a pivotal role in creating extraordinary steamy scenes that captivate audiences.

While steamy scenes in films may polarize opinions, filmmakers continue to find ways to navigate the complexities of portraying intimate moments while safeguarding the well-being of actors and delivering their artistic vision.
