Are Men Creating a Copycat Group?

For the past year, women in Toronto have been utilizing the powerful platform of social media to support each other. They created a Facebook group known as “Are we dating the same guy?” to warn other women about men who have mistreated or harassed them. Similar groups have emerged in various cities worldwide, including New York and London. Unsurprisingly, the creation of this group struck a nerve in Toronto, as men did not appreciate being called out for their misconduct. In response, they have now launched a copycat group called “Are we dating the same girl?”

The Copycat Group

This private Facebook group, unlike its predecessor, is exclusively for men. It is evident that the group’s creation was not driven by genuine concern for men’s safety in the dating world. A glance at the group description confirms this: “[T]hey want to make a group about cheating men. Let’s see if the women are saints!”

The group, which came into existence three months ago, has managed to attract 1,100 members so far. Almost half of these members joined in the past week. In comparison, the original “Are we dating the same guy?” group boasts over 50,000 members. While some of the rules in the new group have been copied directly from the original, including the prohibition of sharing personal or contact information about the women being discussed, there are noteworthy additions. Two rules explicitly state that women (referred to as “females”) are not permitted to join the group. Rule number five specifically states that men with girlfriends or wives cannot share the posts with others for any reason. Rule number six is titled, “Read #5 ladies” and emphasizes that women should refrain from attempting to join the group.

Different Objectives

Social media has already witnessed an influx of women discussing the newly emerged group. They assert that the original group was created with the purpose of warning others about abusive men. However, they believe that the objectives of the new group will differ significantly.

Some glimpses inside the group have indeed raised concerns. While the primary rule of the “Are we dating the same girl?” group is to “be kind and courteous,” members have been observed ridiculing women’s appearances and even discussing women they have never dated. This behavior has sparked conversations on various platforms, with users questioning the group’s intentions.

In a Reddit thread discussing the creation of an “Are we dating the same girl?” group in Ontario, one commenter stated, “They tried to get one up and running, but it quickly became hot or not. The women’s group aims to warn others about potentially dangerous and abusive men, while the men’s group resorts to name-calling and derogatory remarks.”

The Future of the Group

As the group is still in its early stages, its fate remains unknown. It could either evolve into a hub of misogyny or develop into a genuinely beneficial platform for men to seek dating advice. If we consider the original Facebook group’s experience, it seems apparent that men may require some guidance in this area.
