On a gripping Saturday night, Lifetime presents a movie that delves into the realms of reality. This week’s eye-opening feature, Girl in the Closet, stars Tami Roman and Remy Ma as two sisters with contrasting views on childcare. Remy Ma portrays a mother, Cameron, who entrusts her daughter to her sister (Roman) while she recuperates from an aneurysm. Little does Cameron know, she is about to uncover a horrifying secret about her aunt: Aunt Mia is keeping people captive in her basement while profiting from their benefit checks.
The story seems too outrageous to be real, but that’s the nature of the captivating tales adapted by Lifetime. Instead of drawing from mundane headlines, Lifetime weaves intriguing narratives. However, let’s explore the background of Girl in the Closet. How closely does it mirror real life, and on what story is it based? Let’s find out the truth behind the “girl in the closet.”

To put it simply, Girl in the Closet is not entirely based on a true story. It draws inspiration from the case of a girl known as “the girl in the closet” in the media, much like the movie “12 Desperate Hours” from a few weeks ago.
Unlike the movie’s 10-year-old Cameron, the real-life girl in the closet was 8-year-old Lauren Kavanaugh. Initially, Lauren’s mother, Barbara Atkinson, sought to have her daughter adopted. Lauren did spend eight months with her adoptive parents until Atkinson decided to regain custody. Due to the missing signature of the adoptive parents on a crucial document, custody was granted to Atkinson and her husband, Kenneth.
For six years, Lauren lived in a closet, enduring unimaginable conditions while being subjected to physical and sexual abuse by her parents when they took her out. Shockingly, her parents went even further, loaning her to pedophiles. The authorities became involved when they received a tip about the Atkinsons’ horrific treatment of their daughter. Upon rescuing Lauren in June 2001, she was found severely malnourished and abused, with doctors concluding that her development had ceased around the age of two. Consequently, she earned the moniker “the girl in the closet.”

Certain parallels can be drawn between The Girl in the Closet and Lauren’s story. Both Cameron and Lauren were taken away from a safe environment and placed in the care of abusers. While the Atkinsons didn’t imprison others in their home, they neglected and abused their five other children.
The Present Life of the Girl in the Closet
Following her rescue, Bill and Sabrina Kavanaugh legally adopted Lauren. Graduating from high school, however, didn’t spell the end of Lauren’s hardships. At the age of 12, she endured sexual assault by a family member. In 2018, at 25 years old, she faced arrest for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old. Her case was subsequently dismissed due to her mental unfitness to stand trial. Presently, Lauren resides in Texas with the Kavanaughs after leaving jail. Meanwhile, Barbara and Kenneth Atkinson are serving life sentences for their heinous crimes.
