Morgan Davies: A Star Embracing Authenticity and Pushing for Trans Representation

Morgan Davies, wearing circular glasses, stares incredulously off camera in a scene from Netflix

This article is part of Queerty’s 2023 Out For Good series, which celebrates public figures who have come out and made a positive impact in the past year. Today, we shine the spotlight on Morgan Davies, a trailblazing star who has fearlessly embraced their true self and become a driving force for trans representation.

A Journey in Acting

Morgan Davies, born in a small suburb of Sydney, Australia, to a single mother, had an unconventional path into the world of acting. They showed early potential, attending their first audition at the tender age of seven. What started as a lighthearted adventure quickly transformed into a career-defining moment when Davies landed the role of Simone in the 2010 film The Tree.

This breakthrough performance propelled them into the national spotlight, earning them two AACTA nominations and recognition at the celebrated Cannes Film Festival. Reflecting on the experience, Davies humorously admitted, “I had no idea about the gravity of the festival. I wore Crocs!”

Following this success, Davies continued to make their mark in the industry with an AACTA nomination for The Hunter in 2011, appearances in the Spielberg-produced series Terra Nova, and leading roles in short films. Their talent was undeniable, but something felt off.

Embracing Authenticity

Despite their achievements, performing as Morgana Davies didn’t feel authentic to Morgan. At the age of 13, they courageously came out as trans to their mother, agent, and close friends. While met with support, they struggled to reconcile their personal identity with their professional one.

“I quit acting for a bit because there were no roles for trans people at the time, and I was uncomfortable with how I looked, how I presented, and how I was perceived on screen,” Davies candidly shared.

However, acting was their passion, their lifeblood. They couldn’t deny the call to return, though they weren’t ready to introduce themselves to the world as Morgan just yet. The journey to self-acceptance was complex, and Davies found solace by resuming their career as Morgana.

“It kind of showed me where the industry was at the time because I started getting roles as soon as I stopped identifying as trans,” Davies revealed.

A Breakthrough Role

But fate had something extraordinary in store for Davies. The opportunity to play Oberon, a teenager transitioning from female to male, in the Showtime TV series The End presented itself. Initially hesitant, Davies eventually auditioned and won the coveted role.

On that fateful day, Davies decided to come out publicly, facing their fears head-on. Looking back, they admitted, “While I was terrified, it ended up being not as scary as I thought it was.”

This role became a deeply personal journey for Davies, who expressed a profound willingness to go through it all again, not only for themselves but for the entire LGBTQ+ community. They recognized the power of representation in shaping younger generations, sharing, “If I had seen a show like [The End] when I was younger, maybe I wouldn’t have felt so horrible.”

A Rising Star and Advocate

Davies’ star has continued to ascend, making groundbreaking strides in film and television. In the critically acclaimed Evil Dead Rise, they portrayed trans son Danny, whose DJing inadvertently unleashes evil spirits upon their family’s apartment. The character’s journey, free from sensationalized trans narratives, resonated deeply with the LGBTQ+ community, serving as a beacon of representation long-awaited.

In the Netflix series One Piece, Davies took another significant step, playing the nerdy yet courageous Koby. The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga became an instant hit, topping Netflix’s most-watched list upon its September 2023 release.

Looking ahead, Davies is committed to pushing for more trans representation and amplifying stories of joy. They believe in showcasing the vibrant, multifaceted lives trans individuals lead, which include parties, love interests, and truly enjoying oneself.

Reflecting on their recent experiences, Davies expressed a newfound sense of liberation, sharing, “That’s the biggest thing that’s happened to me recently. I can go days without waking up and going to sleep questioning, ‘What gender am I?’… I thought I would think about it ’til I died.”

Morgan Davies is a shining example of authenticity, resilience, and the transformative power of representation. Their journey inspires us all to embrace our true selves and advocate for a world where everyone’s story can be heard and celebrated.
